I'm having more faith that MacFarlane is thinking long-term. Once again Topa's sex change was brought up as a very sore spot for Bortus, with the extra barb of Talia referring to Topa as his daughter. I was a bit bugged about how it wasn't referenced for the rest of Season 1, but pleased to see that it was always there, just under the surface. Looks like it's definitely going to lead to something big.

Some good moments, but not sure what I feel about the episode overall, yet. Kelly's about-face with Cascius seemed to be out of nowhere - but again I suspect that it will be revealed that there is more to it. With that and the ending, this episode was just darker than what I'm used to with the show.

Kelly’s change of heart on Cassius seemed natural to me. She had placed her career over Ed, and now she was doing the same with her new boyfriend. What I didn’t get was Cassius going from the guy who was so rational that it irritated Kelly to the super-desperate guy sending giant Bruce Willis flowers to her in a bid to win her back. I get that he was probably more invested in the relationship at that point, but his behavior in the episode just seemed forced to justify Kelly dumping him.

I dunno, I kind of seen it like Vinny. One second their enjoying a 1940's Earth hologram, the next second their done, over with. No compromise no sleeping on it. Almost like Kelly was waiting to drop the hammer on Cassius.
You're right about "desperate Cassius", Michael. All together looked like a quick way to drop him off the show.

I didn't question Kelly's breakup with Cassius.  I just took it as a cue that a lot of time had passed between this episode and the last time we saw them (which seems to be the case for many of the Orville episodes...weeks or months passing between them).  That allows more than enough time for Kelly to decide the relationship wasn't what she wanted.

Excellent episode.

The Moclans, it seems, are being cast as the Union’s version of the Arab/Muslim world. So very different culturally that we must overlook some deep divides in order to be “allies”.

Huh. I hadn't considered that before, but it's all there - in addition to this episode's elaboration of why the Union even works with the Moclans to begin with - they provide technological weaponry and defense expertise.

For which the real-world allegory for the Arab/Muslim world would be....oil.

+++++++++++

And note that neither side is demonized, or shown to be superior to the other. It's more about the crew discovering the cultural differences. bit by bit, and working through them.

As with the best of STAR TREK, the "other" is not presented as villainous. Antagonistic, perhaps, but not necessarily beyond communication or compromise.

Excellent, moving, intriguing and stylish episode (the final shot was perfect). Bortus is both funny and full of depth. Was sorry to see Alara go but I'm really warming to Talla. And I'm now starting to see Malloy's humour as esssential to the show. His interactions with the rest of the crew, especially Bortus, are priceless. Just a finely put-together episode.

Random crewmember observation: Ensign Turco works in Engineering and reports to LaMarr? Seems like an HR red flag. Granted, this was the fleet that thought it was a good idea to assign a Captain’s ex-wife as his First Officer, but still.

When Ed and Kelly are discussing the Moclans and he says we 'need' them; as simply a valued Union member, their engineering prowess, as an ally against the Krill, or something more?

Another excellent episode. Really loved how they flipped the subject matter of this allegory on its head.

••

Remember, too, that the relationship was some three months in when we first found out about it.

Coming back to this:

"Realizing just now that Claire--not my favorite character--has been the central focus of my least favorite and most favorite episodes."

--

Curious - which are your least and most favorite? I think I can guess the least, but not the most.

Won't spoil it for people in other time zones but I had a feeling for awhile that this might happen.  Really curious how it's going to be resolved.

(Incidentally, I kept hearing whispers of LOST IN SPACE incidental music in tonight’s episode, especially in Ty’s solo scenes.)

I’ve had the distinct feeling that all of the slow buildup regarding both the Moclans and the Kaylons is gonna have some kind of payoff, down the line. And, in regards to the Kaylons, Issac is the only one we’ve seen...for now.
++++++++

I hate being right all the time.

And, regarding the score, I heard some James Horner/ALIENS, Jerry Goldsmith/STAR TREK- THE MOTION PICTURE, and even a pinch of David Arnold/INDEPENDENCE DAY in there.

In other news, the set of pipes on Scott Grimes. I keep forgetting he started a singing career in his teen idol days. I keep forgetting he was a teen idol.

I was wondering why a race of AI beings lived in a place so...stylized and pretty.

 When I saw hand rails on the stairs I knew something was off.....
