I don't recall any mention made regarding the child's growth, but when seeing that the kid was no longer an infant in the first two episodes I just assumed their species matures rapidly.

I thought when they visited the planet, it was mentioned then that Moclans mature quickly.

I hope we don’t find out they only live to be four years old!

After last summer's rumor she would be leaving, I figured this would be that episode. Then for a hot second it looked like maybe not , but alas...

As soon as Bortus said he’d bet on her during the opening armwrestle (certainly a reference to Worf betting on security chief Tasha Yar in the teaser for TNG’s “Skin of Evil”), I knew this was gonna be her last episode. Knew it. Just glad they didn’t kill her off.

A bittersweet episode, to be sure. Loved it. Great visual effects, great character moments. A double-dose of TREK (Robert Picardo, John Billingsley) and SEINFELD (Jason Alexander, Patrick Warburton, both unrecognizable) alums. An engaging story which gets surprisingly dark and tense, for a while.

But...Alara is a strong contender for my favorite character! It’s hard to pick one on this show. Seeing her leave is a real downer.

I’ve been seeing those same rumors, so I was just relieved that she wasn’t killed off.

I'm bummed to see any cast member leave as they are such a great cast and I like each character, but really loved Alara. IMDB lists her in all the episodes this season, but I guess they had to as to not spoil her departure.

I kept dismissing those rumors since there was never any hint of any official (or even unofficial) word from the show or any of the actors.  Because of the silence, I was theorizing that perhaps they are making it look like she's leaving the show and then there will be a surprise return.

Of course wishful thinking may be involved on my part.

Has there been any confirmation that she's off the show now that the episode has aired?

Phlox vs the EMH! Loved it.
It was sad to see Alara leave-- she was an interesting character and I hope she returns at some point.
Really, THE ORVILLE is the best STAR TREK we've seen in a very long time.

Just watched the first ep of season 2, i had a smile on
my face throughout.I spotted that the bulbous headed
alien is Cleveland Brown!
I just love how "Next Gen" it is, but how it subverts
expectations, is funny and serious at the same time. I
think it may be my favourite show at the moment.

Home was an interesting one... and ultimately turned out to be an excellent episode, I thought. And it did surprise me. As Greg said, it became quite dark and tense there for a bit and this episode was, what, 5% humour? Seemed to be the most serious episode so far. And a surprise to devote an entire episode to one character, only to then get rid of the character. Not sure I like the show reflecting the major structural beats of TNG quite so closely. Will Bortus now become head of security?

Wonderful send-off scene for Alara. The score by Joel McNeely was beautiful for this scene -- lovely warm trumpet solo and a pretty piece of music as a whole.

+++++++++

As I watched the episode, I found myself thinking the same think. Not much comedy in this “comedy”. It was essentially played as a straightforward sci-fi/drama story. Sort of a riff on TNG’s “Family”.

Overall, an enjoyable episode. I caught the subtle note that in Alara's daydream, she's not Xelayan.

I've been hoping that Patrick Warburton would appear on the show at some point....but I ended up feeling disappointed by this execution. It would have been interesting to see him take on a more serious role than he usually does. Hey, 2 SEINFELD cast members in one episode.

Gordon's line in reaction to seeing Alara's planet and Ed's reaction to it were both amusing and interesting.

Gordon's line was proven when he threw the metal flask in the driveway to see it crushed. (The flask seemed to fall faster in the higher gravity, unlike everything else in the episode.) I expected Alara's father to find it later and comment on it.

Well done episode. (snif snif)

But why didn’t they have two shuttles last week?

Good catch!
Not sure if I've seen Bortus fly a shuttle so it may be moot.

I suspect that this will not be the last time that we see her.

Cherry Chevapravatdumrong wrote this episode, along with last season's Alara-specific episode, which I also thought was written very well.

*****************************

It was mentioned in that episode that they only had time to work on one shuttle in order to handle the radiation.  The story made it seem as if only LaMarr knew specifically what to do, so only he could do it.  I kept wondering why Isaac didn't have an idea or why LeMarr couldn't talk Isaac through it as he working...

Hmm. New episode of THE ORVILLE tonight. Season premiere of STD tonight. Which one to choose...?

Snark aside, it looks like the Krill are back in this one. We'll see if they follow up on some of the potential plot threads hinted at, last season.
