Released forty years ago today:

HERE is the trailer.

It's been years since I've seen this. I do remember enjoying it.

Anyone seen it?

I saw it in theaters and being an impressionable kid of 7, thought it was great and didn't quite get that nothing was resolved.  Years later, after Jackson's trilogy, I took another look and ... not that great.  However, the scene when the Black Riders are sniffing out the Hobbits in the Shire is almost identical in both films.

I like it better earlier on in the film, when it looks more like traditional cel animation. It leans too heavily on its rotoscoping and then the battle scenes where it's basically solarised filmed footage look kind of horrible to me. And obviously it doesn't resolve its story.

I first saw it on TV broadcast in something like 1984 and liked it at first. Looking back now (based on memories that are probably 10 to 15 years old from the last time I watched it)...Some of it's OK.

Don't you think an updated version is needed to reflect contemporary times? So instead of a ring, it could be a mobile phone. It could even be called "Lord of the Ringtones". Gandalf could download an app, Frodo could send a text message and Aragorn could do an old-fashioned telephone call!

It'd be fun to see them uploading Instagram selfies while on their quest.

I didnít realize until I was much older that this was a different production from the Rankin/Bass THE HOBBIT and THE RETURN OF THE KING movies.

This was one of those films I never got to see in theatres and became slightly obsessed with as a result, picking up the Fotonovel adaptation and Mad Magazine parody and poring over them in excruciating detail.

When my copy of the Fotonovel was stolen at school, it became a major issue for me, and years later, each time I see one (which is not often) I am still flooded with the impulse to replace the one I lost. I think I have three copies of it by now. I've managed to stop buying them at this point, but hey, who knows? I might come across one tomorrow and feel its exactly the one that was taken...

My affection and admiration for the animated Hobbit is deep and sincere. This one doesn't quite hold the same allure for me over time. The Fotonovel and that issue of Mad however do. :-)

I love THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Beautiful movie. I own a
cel from the scene referenced above with the black
rider. It's too bad they didn't get to continue with a
sequel, the ending is rather abrupt and makes for a not
so fulfilling experience.

Loved this movie and Bakshi's Wizards a LOT as a kid. It doesn't hold up as well over time, none of Bakshi's do I don't think but they were amazing and awesome at the time.

I loved it because it existed. The movie poster is awesome. I had some small silver version of that....Where did that go to I wonder? I still love the theme song a great deal too.

The horrible, wretched rotoscoping ruined the movie's chances for a sequel though. I detest that effect in this movie.

I'm finally sitting down to watch this for the very first time.

It's not uninteresting!
