TRAILER

Granted, youd pretty much have to be from Mars not to know that DUMBO is about a flying elephant, but isnt there something off about a trailer that shows him flying, then tries to build suspense over whether he can?

Yeah, that was a bad call in editing the trailer.

I agree with you both.

The animated version is possibly my least favourite Disney movie ever - sorry! - so I can't imagine I'll be breaking any speed records to see this.

Is Disney intending to make live-action versions of all their cartoons?

"From The Imagination of Tim Burton"... a remake of a movie that's almost 80 years old. He had the premise, the characters, the story all handed to him. How is this from his imagination??

Id be more interested to see fully CG remakes of some of their recent animation. LILO AND STITCH, for instance.

Isn't that actually being planned?

Trailer is fine... Tim Burton doesn't bother me... but I am concerned about all the superfluous new characters, and a screenplay credit from the same guy who wrote three lousy TRANSFORMERS movies!  That's enough to give anybody pause about this one.

Live action intrigues me less than full CG.

The thing I always found amazing about Dumbo was that it was a feature film with a scant 60 minute running time. I might check out Tim Burton's take on it because I like his work, but I don't have any interest beyond that.

That run time is another red flag for me. At 2hrs 10min this is more than twice as long as the origin. I suspect a heaping helping of Peter Jackson style bloat will have oozed into the production.

I remember reading a review of the original Dumbo praising it for not trying to bloat it to extend the running time. It was shown originally with Disney short cartoons to meet the time needs of theaters.

And yes, Disney is planning to remake every movie in live action. Can't wait to see the live action Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

No...not really...

WFRR will be redone with animated/CGI human leads and animatronic toons. (Not inside knowledge, just a gloomy prediction.)

And as far as I know, Zemeckis (to borrow from another thread) has kayoed any notion of remaking/rebooting BACK TO THE FUTURE. Not sure if he and Bob Gale can prevent Universal from doing that eventually, but they refuse to participate even in discussions, supposedly.

Less than a week to go, and still no early reviews from any major critics.  Usually not a good sign.

Of the four (!!!) Disney "live-action" remakes (or "realmakes," as I call 'em) set for this year, DUMBO is at the bottom of the list for my kids.  No real interest or enthusiasm for this one, and my own opinion still holds that whenever Tim Burton tackles an established property, we end up with a leaden clunker (box office numbers for BATMAN be damned).

I will enjoy perusing the eventual reviews!
