This was being mentioned on BBC news until Stan Lee died. And now seems eclipsed in the news cycle by Stan's death. Almost like the news can't handle two eulogies in one bulletin.

Time again for a story Keir Dullea tells, which, alas, does not translate so well to the printed page.

Douglas Rain was the last person hired.* The whole movie was done, when he came in for essentially a day's work recording the voice of HAL. However, this mean someone else had to read the lines for the actors to respond to. Filming in London, Kubrick got his A.D. to do the job. Which mean, when Dullea said "Open the pod bay door, HAL," he heard "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that," in a thick London accent!

* According to what I've read, Kubrick had actually hired Martin Balsam to record a much more emotional version of HAL, but was ultimately dissatisfied with the result.

It reminds me of this clip of Darth Vader speaking in his native accent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQFho0_G1VI
