Crazy to think back to when these books were originally produced, with no thought to them being endlessly reprinted, AND paying royalties!

What I think is crazy, Mr Byrne, is that you guys at Marvel would create iconic characters and write impactful storylines without any fanfare. To think backin the day, I might pop down to my local newsagents and pick up say, Incredible Hulk #180 or The Uncanny X-Men #140 without any advertisement. If I hadn’t popped down or maybe not heard about it from word of mouth I’d never know.

Too true! Most people today are unaware of how “accidental” these mega-hits were, especially Dark Phoenix. That cataclysmic conclusion couldn’t be promoted in advance, as Chris and I didn’t even know we were doing it!

I remember seeing the Superman/Spider-Man comic. I obviously hadn't seen the house ads. I thought, 'What the hell is this?' (In a good way).

That was the Big One! (And let’s do our best to forget that an utterly pointless adaptation of THE WIZARD OF OZ usurped the place of SUPERMAN/SPIDER-MAN as the first Marvel/DC “crossover”.)

If nothing else, remember I'll get, like, 5¢ for each one sold!

You just got yourself a nickel.

I didn't even know this book existed until I saw the thread.

Jack, Big John, and The Chief in one HUGE volume and no one has ****ed with the colours?

Hell, yes!

Ah, remembering back in the day when writers/artists were just trying to tell the best stories they could. And not looking for the next mega-hit that would be promoted to death, have a gazillion cross overs and spread across the whole spectrum of titles the company produced.

Dark phoenix could not happen today. Not on the manner it did before.

That scene where Angel says he was a member of the Hellfire club? Well who else would have been found to be a member?
Those panels of Spider-Man and Silver Surfer? Entire issues of their titles devoted to those panels and what they did next.

Think of the FF issue where everyone piles on Galactus. How long and how many issues of other titles  would that have gone on?

I miss those days.

I am too scared to store those giant books vertical.  I am afraid the binding will give.  They are heavy!  I keep them under the bed, in the closet, in their boxes.  I am going to get a lectern so I can pore over them.  IDW's AEs have been the best thing to come along.  I just love seeing the art at that size.
