I think it's a perfect time to look back on the 1999 Comic Relief Special.  I just watched it for the first time so to me, it's like discovering an old Nostradamus notebook or something.

But, from what I've read, this was written by Steven Moffat before he became showrunner yet much of this satirical look at Who seemed to come to pass.  There are many parallels/coincidences, not the least of which is the blonde, female 13th Doctor.

I haven't been enjoying the new series too much so for me, this skit leaves me really longing to see a series or 2 or 3 of Atkinson as the Doctor.

Atkinson would have been superb as the Doctor.

Atkinson would have been superb as the Doctor.

I think that will have to be my next bit of Googling.  Whether he was ever interested or offered the part.  But I agree and it even seems too perfect in retrospect.  I did read that Hugh Grant was offered the role before Eccleston and he dismissed it without consideration.  Said he later regretted it and hoped to at least play a villain at some point.

If true, it seems the new show was wanting a more "good looking" Doctor from the beginning and then finally got him with Tenant.
