As someone who loves the original novel and thinks the 1989 film is a disappointing cheese-fest, I think this teaser trailer for the new remake is just about as perfect as I could have hoped.
Really digging it. No pun intended...

A most EXCELLENT horror novel!! And like Shaun, I found the movie to be a big let-down (please DON'T get me started on the HORRIFYINGLY BAD sequel).
I am very much looking forward to this remake.

I haven't read the book but it seemed like a typical King movie of the times, and since King wrote the screenplay what do you guys think is missing? Is it on him, production, acting?
I must say I did enjoy Fred Gwynne's effort in the original.

I don't usually like to call out actors for their performances, but Dale Midkiff pretty much tanked Pet Sematary for me. Part of what makes the novel so effective to me is the anguish and madness that engulfs Louis Creed, and I get almost none of that from Midkiff's performance. Denise Crosby doesn't exactly help things either. Fred Gwynne's great, though. I don't know if I'll see the remake.

It has to be hard to portray that bottomless grief that the characters endure in "Pet Sematary," but yeah, the actors were not up for that task. The funeral scene in the book- fistfight and all- is devastating.
I think the new trailer makes this new adaptation look pretty swell but we'll see.

Pity it isn't being produced in the UK as we spell it "cemetery" which, of course, is the right way (and, Americans, when are you gonna drive on the right side of the road?). ;-)
Seriously, though, I quite enjoyed the film, but that was a long time ago. Would it stand up to the nostalgia? Wasn't there a direct-to-video sequel or did I imagine that?

We spell 'cemetery' the same way, you know :) It's intentionally spelled wrong in the book title.
The book is actually one of my least favorite King books and I only like the movie for Fred Gwynne's super performance. (I agree with the above poster about the quality of the other stars.)
That said, I'll probably still see this. The premise always intrigued me and I'll watch John Lithgow in most anything.

Erm, I knew that, John. Was...erm, just testing you. :-)
(Glad to hear it, now you can say "petrol station" rather than "gas station")...
From what little I remember of the film, and it did creep me out, I do think this is a concept that could be served better by another film.

You see, Robbie, it's about a cemetery for children's dead pets. Young children. One of those children, at some point over the years, has put up a sign. It reads Pet Sematary; little kids don't always spell as well as adults.
I thought quite a lot of the book is well written, though I think it isn't as good as many of the novels King wrote in that era. I suppose I simply don't like where the story ends up going. The build-up to all the badness is told very well and the novel has some cool story elements. How one bad decision leads to another. Jud's warnings after his previous experiences. The malignant power that seems to sway destiny at times.
Agree with what many have said, in that Fred Gwynne made an excellent Jud, but the rest of the cast were not up to the job.

And watching the trailer, I think John Lithgow should make a decent Jud, also. Difficult to judge what the rest of the film will be like from so little.

Peter, I was spelling "antiestablishmentarianism" correctly from my first day on the earth! ;-)
(I think)
I agree that Fred Gwynne was the MVP of the film.

This looks miles better than the 1989 version.
Apart from Fred Gwynne, Dale Midkiff and Denise Crosby were horribly miscast. Both good actors, but this wasn't the right material for them. They couldn't convey the grief and desperation that came across from the Creeds in the book.
The ending was altered by Paramount execs as well to give it "the slasher" treatment, that is far different from the open (but guessable) ending of the book.

Fred Gwynne and The Ramones were the best things about the original.
On the other hand, I'd like to forget that they made a second one.
