Word has come out that WB has hired James Gunn to take over Suicide Squad.  They're saying that he's being given leeway to do his own thing.  It won't be a direct sequel to the first film.  It seems another part of the DC/Marvel comics rivalry has made its way to the film world, with one side trying to grab the other company's talent.

So I wonder if "not a direct sequel" this means it's an entirely new team of supervillains being recruited for a new mission?

I enjoyed Suicide Squad. For me it's good news that James Gunn is on board for the sequel.

At the very least, DC has scored a PR coup. Hiring the guy that Marvel/Disney cut ties with is a nice touch.

It won't get me to pay money to see a DC film in the theater but it's a nice way to get some attention.

Rather than "word had come out" and "they're saying," can we please link to a credible news source in the original post for threads that report news like this?

Alt-right journalist : 1 / Disney : 0

I really wished Disney would come to its senses and would "give the finger" to that alt-right journalist by sticking to his employee for decade old bad humor. The main problem is that Disney is so focused on the american market and its BO. Frankly, I don't think Gunn's tweets would have made such a difference in the international BO had he remained on the third GOTG movie. But now, everybody is aware he won't be directing the third movie and if the third movie is done I don't know if the BO will be as good. I suspect it won't.

DC just made a really nice job : giving a good director to a succesfull yet hated movie. The Suicide Squad licence is back on tracks.

Are we going to enter the age of the superhero equivalent of the "Monday Night Wars"?

Well, SS 2 will certainly be better than SS 1, not that that would be so hard. I still don't want to pay money to watch a movie with Will Smith, of all people, as Deadshot.

It would be nice to have a few more decent DC movies and this seems to be a step in the right direction. Optimistic.

BTW, Fabrice, email me please.

After the news came out, Dave Bautista has publicly said he wants to sign on.  Let the speculation as to casting commence.

Possibly Grundy. Or Bane. Or Blockbuster. Or...DC has a lot of mostly-human-looking super-strong supervillains and I can't remember all of them.

Like I said, it's good news to me. BUT, Warners has done this thing before. His name was Joss Whedon. He was a successful producer and director once, and even did a few jobs for Marvel. Then came a little movie they wanted him to touch up a bit before release.

Are you being sarcastic, Joe?  I didn't follow the behind the scenes sequence of events of JL that closely but I thought Whedon was brought in to try and salvage that movie, not just touch up?

Which I thought he did.  JL was watchable and re-watchable IMO.  Not without fault(s) but compared to many of the DC movies, a big improvement in tone and characterization.

A lame attempt at being sarcastic. Sorry.
