It debuted on US TV thirty years ago today:
I quite enjoyed this, although my broadcaster didn't seem to be consistent in showing it!
I like the modern setting, and there were some solid episodes. Was it the greatest show ever? No. Is it a cult series? Not sure. Would it make a Top 10 list of the best sci-fi shows of any era? I doubt it. But there have been shows which get credit - and I don't think they were necessarily as solid as this one.
I'd probably revisit it to see how it holds up.

I’m not a fan of modernized versions of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. The characters and sensibilities belong to an earlier time. Plus, Wells’ “surprise ending” doesn’t really work for a contemporary audience.

This one and KILLRAVEN were both sequels to the original idea, and that's okay--I enjoyed both. But, yes, I liked the first season a lot and the second was one of the worst, most disappointing things I've ever subjected myself to.

I recall that the premise of the show was that the events of the 1953 film had actually taken place, but were there in-universe references to Grover’s Mill or H.G. Wells’ original novel?

When I was growing up I would watch anything on television that was even vaguely Science Fiction - appallingly bad series like Beyond Westworld or duff TV movies like The Love War. This take on War of the Worlds was the series that helped me to break out of that 'must watch it' mentality. It was so bad that after two episodes I never tuned in again. I'm sincerely baffled by anyone feeling the need to celebrate the anniversary of this one... the anniversary of its cancellation, maybe, but...
PS I am, however, greatly looking forward to the BBC's take on Wells' novel coming later this year.

One thing I remember about the premier episode is that it reused the then-thirty-year-old special effects shot blowing up the Los Angeles Court House as a current event.

I really wanted to like this. But I couldn’t get past the hoops it kept making us jump through.Yes the film happened. Nope, no one remembers it.
Why? Y-e-a-h, we’ll figure that out some other time.
But it did happen.

I remember seeing this on ITV late night on a Saturday circa 1991 / 1992 when I was 13, and even then thinking it was terrible.

Mr McPhee, if it was late at night, perhaps you were simply tired. Give it another go. ;-)

I'm in the camp who liked Season 1 and the characters a lot, but thought the attempt to "save" the show by rebooting it in Season 2 was a miserable failure.

Killing off Ironhorse was the biggest mistake they made.

It was a strange show, but I liked it well enough.
Didn't the second season end with a cliff-hanger?
For some reason, I think there was a confrontation set (but not filmed at) a high school in the Philadelphia suburbs?

I can't remember the details but I'm sure the second season ended with peace between the humans and aliens.
