Of the Transformers franchise I have only a fondness for the original cartoon and the Beastmasters CG show. Everything else is a pile Cybertronian junk. But this latest trailer for the coming movie suggests it could be better than anything thats come before:

Yeah, I had minimal interest until all the G1 designs started popping up in the trailer. Although the character who looks like Starscream is apparently Blitzwing, even though those characters have entirely different color schemes.

My response:

"WTF...this looks like the Transformers!"

Yep. THIS.

Meanwhile, there are two Triple Changers in the movie...neither of whom are Blitzwing.

This thread must be what it’s like for civilians who stumble into a comic book forum!

That's how I feel when people start talking about Harry Potter.

I have to echo the sentiments of this was just another movie trailer to me until I saw the familiar G1 character designs! I totally want to see this now!

Now they need to put out a cut of the trailer with “The Touch” playing in the background.

I don't even care for Transformers as a whole (and certainly not the previous films), but this trailer almost got me choked-up!!  What the hell??

I will have no qualms taking my son to see this one, if he wants.

Soundwave and ejecting Ravage out of his chest makes me think I may have to see this in the theater, so many familiar faces in the trailer...

For some reason I have never been able to internalise which Transformer is which, beyond the most obvious five or six.

The rest just look too similar & the minimal colour highlights used in the movies have made that doubly so.

JB’s comment above made me laugh out loud because it is sooo true

Shockwave, Optimus Prime and Soundwave
looking very Gen.1 has me excited. Kinda
nice to be able to give Michael Bay the
middle finger after his comments about the
cartoon designs not working for live
action.

Unfortunately, it took five grotesque, unwatchable efforts to get here--but this actually looks like a really good TRANSFORMERS film.

It will be a major uphill climb to get audiences to turn out in the kind of numbers they once did, but a Christmas release should help.

Judging by my own reaction and that of others in this thread so far, I think that the nostalgia of folks my age who are now parents bringing their families to see this movie could really play to its favor.

Just so long as there are no jokes about how to circumnavigate statutory rape or the F word, you may be correct. But I am still currently of the opinion I will never see another Transformers movie again because of both these factors.

Admission: the trailer got a tear or two out of me. Played the “family” card.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Definitely the best of THE TRANSFORMERS film for me. (I gave up after the second one, but based on all I've read about them, I feel safe in assuming that the last three did not improve upon the first.) It's much more coherent than the Michael Bay outings and outside of a few "shits", it's extremely family-friendly.

To set expectations, most of the G1 fanservice takes place at the very beginning of the film. But what there is of it is glorious, from Peter Cullen voicing a toy/cartoon accurate Optimus Prime to seeing Soundwave and Shockwave with their unique vocalizations from the cartoon.

The rest of the movie is reminiscent of films like ET and THE IRON GIANT, hitting those familiar coming-of-age beats (in a good way) while mixing in higher, world-ending stakes and robot combat.

The story works as both as a prequel to the Michael Bay movies and as a stealth reboot. I'd prefer the latter.

Saw this a few weeks ago with my brother and my nephew. Its easily the best Transformers movie since the animated movie. And the G1 designs make it much, much easier to follow the action.

Thanks for the spoiler warning, Michael.

Now that the film is released in North America, let’s open this up to
SPOILERS for the remainder of the thread.

Transformers movies are a guilty pleasure. I admit it. I'm not proud of it.
