It don't think I'll stir any controversy by saying DC and Marvel are the two most famous superhero universes in the Western World.

So what's number three? Like, if you ask a civilian to start naming superheroes, who's the first non-Marvel or DC character they mention? Does that make that character's universe number three, or is there a better set of criteria?

I have two possible answers myself, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Not really a superhero, but thinking Judge Dredd. Best I can do, I'm afraid.

I'm not familiar enough with Dark Horse or Image to talk about them.

Fuck me, what about Hellboy? Or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

Ask a civilian and I fear they might answer: Mr Incredible or Elastigirl.

Or maybe the Tick.

TV and movies tend to invade the public consciousness more than comics.

TMNT, without a doubt. Everyone and their brother knows them.

But do civilians think of them as superheroes?

Granted ”superhero” is a term I have seen wildly misused — from an article in SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN referring to “evil superheroes” to Brad Bird insisting IRON GIANT is NOT a superhero movie — but the wo/man in the street seems unlikely to connect the term to the Turtles.

I have never followed the Turtles religiously, but I have known folk who have, and none of them have ever used the term "superheroes".

My choices are not ideal. Judge Dredd is certainly not a superhero. And I am not sure I've heard Hellboy referred to as one, either.

Well, in Japan, I presume it's the Ultraman universe.
