We've had 25 Bond films.

******************************

Hate to be "that guy", but there's been 26.  That's not including Never Say Never Again and the Casino Royale spoof.

And, IMHO, I think the next Daniel Craig "Bond" movie needs to be the last one.  However, they should introduce Idris Elba as a different Double-O, referring to Bond here and there in future movies.  Refresh the series and keep the franchise alive in that way.

If they really need to bring back James Bond, do so with someone completely unknown and after a few Elba Double-O movies

Yes, there are 24 official 007 films that take place in the same canon. I counted, too, Bill.

NSNA was produced by another studio (they couldn't even use the official theme). And I doubt we can include the spoof. Otherwise, do we include the 1954 TV movie?

I think this Cracked article surprisingly brings up an valid criticism of the Craig films.

On one hand, the writer of that article wants an old-school like Bond adventure, and on the other hand he complains the series hasn't evolved. Not very valid as criticisms go.

He did raise the thing that really bothered me too,
though: As much as I liked SkyFall, the sudden gear
change from 'The start of Bonds Career' to 'The End of
Bonds Career' really threw me!

From that CRACKED article:

"He also falls in love with Vesper Lynd, only to be betrayed and watch her die, spurring a lifestyle of treating women like absolute garbage for no reason."

Remind me. Which women (other than those who were out to kill him) has Bond treated like "absolute garbage"?

Yes, I should have been clear last night, that's the criticism that I was referring to. It's similar to the oft-sited criticism of the Nolan Batman films. Bruce spends his life training, becomes Batman, takes down two major villains, then quits for 8 years, comes back for one more adventure, then retires for good.

Now even though I've been enjoying the Craig films, he is correct in that he hasn't really played a proper "James Bond" yet, in the strictest sense. As consequence, I suppose, of the new ongoing storylines approach, as opposed to the traditional version of each film being a standalone adventure (which I hope they go back to, next time).

James Bond has a new boss.

Cary Fukunaga has been named director for the 25th installment of the 007 franchise, with Daniel Craig reprising his role – reportedly for the last time – as the man with the license to kill.

Bond producers Eon made the announcement on Thursday, adding that production had been pushed back to March 2019 for a worldwide release date of Feb. 14, 2020, shifting Bond from its traditional winter slot (and some four months back from its previous launch date of Oct. 25, 2019).

“We are delighted to be working with Cary. His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure," said Eon's Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli in a tweet.

Fukunaga, meanwhile, is best known for directing the acclaimed first season of HBO's True Detective and the Netflix feature Beasts of No Nation. He most recently directed the Netflix series Maniac, starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.
