I posted this gorgeous image from X-Men#116 in a couple of Facebook groups this afternoon. I still remember being in awe when I first read the book waaaay back in 1978. One reader asked how long it took John Byrne to draw this picture. John, do you still remember that?

Saw it there ... and as I mentioned, I started following the Claremont/Byrne X-Men with issue 113. I was in college at the time (yes I am that old) and picked it up when it came out on the rack.
I distinctly remember when I first saw this issue, and this page in particular and I was absolutely blown away - I spent 35 cents and was getting THIS quality of art and story.
I was sooooooo hooked.

Ah... how I love those X-Men stories of that era -- In particular, JB's artwork!
This page reminds me... there was another scene of a city or some complex that JB drew in an issue of "Uncanny X-Men" around this same period which I recall an interview in the "X-Men Companion" where JB stated he xeroxed half of the drawing and flipped it to create the drawing. I still have the book somewhere, but I will have to dig it up to find the specifics to the drawing.

Thank you for answering John :-). X-Men #114 - 117 were my first X-Men. I have got the UK pence copies. I live in the Netherlands and sometimes we got the US copies, and sometimes the pence copies. And not every issue was available in the Netherlands. My next X-Men was #127, and I remember those were magical times. Thank you for being a part of a very happy time :-).

Art Note: all the figures whose limbs are visible seem to be leading with the same side arm and leg. A no-no!

Erik Larsen goes over all your comics with a fine tooth comb looking for mistakes to "fix". Surprised he didn't see that one.

The only thing about that double page scene to me is the foreground rocks could've been inked with a heavier Joe Sinnott line to add scale and depth. I guess that wasn't Austin's style though, but everything else is meticulous. I would never complain. I loved the page before that where they were climbing on the title as a snowy peak, very Will Eisner! But it wasn't done all that much yet then.
I thought I remembered some touches like people having frosty breath when they spoke, but maybe that was Hank and Jean in #113-114.

JB has always been great at drawing exotic-looking buildings, spaceships, etc. Clothing designs, too (see MAN OF STEEL #1 for proof).
Relatedly -- I remember the AVENGERS WEST COAST issue where the splash page has Vision's head, ah, disassembled. I looked at it and thought "wow, that's a lot of detail, that must've taken a lot of effort to draw."
Did it? My guess now is "no."
