Thank you Matt Reed and John Popa.  I saw a movie two days ago, "Nico, 1988" about the singer from "The Velvet Underground" and the actress' take on Nico was stunning.  And I thought it was a shame that she was going to be overlooked and ignored for such a fantastic performance BECAUSE it's such a small film.

My sentiment matches what John Popa wrote. I don't like the Academy picking obscure films for the sake of it (which I don't think they do), but I do like the idea of trying to reward the best film of the year, regardless of its box office.

The idea behind the new category seems flawed -- wasn't the expansion in the best film category from 5 noms to 10 supposed to already accomplish this? Maybe we can go back to 5 films nominated for best picture again now.

Ed, I saw NICO 1988 last week, and liked it a lot. Although at Trine Dyrholm's fearless puffiest and sweatiest she looked a million times healthier than Päffgen did on her best day at the same age.

Looks like the Academy was listening to the backlash. They will not be giving an award out for "most popular".
