After 17 years of nothing but prequels, we finally get some post-Nemesis Trek.

I would watch it if it was on CBS or normal cable. Still not enough of a motivator for me to subscribe to CBS All-Access.

Why there hasn't been a Riker-Troi spin-off is beyond me.

That narrator's voice sounds familiar...

Sounds like Sonequa Martin-Green (Burham from STD) to me...

STD is such an unfortunate acronym.

On paper it seems to be a Picard who sympathizes with the post-NEMESIS plight of the Romulans, and makes an interesting twist on the same-old same-old Starfleet/Federation-centric storytelling of previous series.

As has been the trend of the last 20-25 years they've been making the upper and security echeleons of Starfleet increasingly corrupt and morally ambiguous.   I wouldn't be shocked that someone within those ranks (and possibly Sec. 31) decided to take advantage of the Romulans when they were weak and vulnerable.   I can definitely see that not sitting well with Picard.

In 2009, IDW published "Star Trek: Countdown," a four-issue prequel series to Abram's STAR TREK, plotted by two of the film's writers, Orci and Kurtzman. At the time, everyone involved swore up and down that the comic was in continuity and canon. Picard is a major player in that comic-book story line.

The story is set eight years after STAR TREK: NEMESIS and tells us that Data has effectively resurrected himself by imprinting his identity over that of the B-4 android and is now captain of the Enterprise-E. Picard has become the Federation Ambassador to Vulcan.

Basically, Romulus blowing up happened in the prime timeline before the time travel that produced the Kelvin timeline.  So all of the expanded universe stuff like novels, video games, comics, etc. that have continued the prime universe all have Romulus exploding and Spock disappearing.  But no one knows where he went or that the other timeline even exists.
