I've said before that I think the BBC have trapped themselves by having the Doctor regenerate as a woman. Next change, and there will be outrage if the character turns back into a man.

But, there is a way around this. Next time, have the Doctor become a Black woman, and after that a Black man.

Of course, if he becomes White again the time after that....

Have you seen the new Sonic Screwdriver? Rather an
unfortunate shape for the first female Doctor, unless
they intended to court controversy.

I think the best angle to take for the next male doctor is an actor from the Indian subcontinent.  Maintains the British purview.  And certainly represents a woefully underrepresented minority amongst heroic characters in non-Indian media.

It's a desperation move to me. I would have found a really good midget actor if Peter Dinklage wasn't available or willing and gone with that for a different perspective. That I can see as being an interesting regeneration, all I expect from this one is stereotypes and platitudes, but will give it a go anyhow... you never know.

I just hope that all the SJW`s who wanted a female
Doctor actually watch the show past her first episode. We
have had Romana, why not bring her character back?

Bill, totally agree about Romana. They could have made a memorable season by having something take the Doctor out of action, and it is up to Jodie Whittaker as Time Lady Romana to take charge, sort out everything and ultimately rescue the Doctor over the course of the season.

Sounds good to me Peter!
Also, they kind of shot their bolt by having a female
incarnation of The Master immediately before a female
Doctor, when they could have used The Rani.

Stop making sense, Bill!

Now they can be edgy and have a male Rani!

I'd have loved a Romana season. Nothing permanently broken. Some fans have put forth their case that Gallifreyans change sex sometimes, and that this particular time lord had the seeds for becoming a woman early on or even all along. I just don't see it at all, it just seems bizarre where the Master becoming Missy was a surprise twist to a secondary character. I'll give it a chance to make it work but it just seems a big trendy mistake where I'll end up thinking there will be a season where they do reveal it wasn't really the Doctor in order to rescue it's viability. A time travel adventure doesn't seem the best format for 'exploring gender issues' or 'empowerment' to me, especially with a main character that's been around since 1963.

I think they could explore those issues in a time travel
format, but it doesn`t HAVE to be the main character
swapping genders! As i said before, i just hope the
SJW`s stick around.

Whoops, replied to the wrong thread! I think the new series’ ratings will start strong and then drop down to where they were before - another phenomenon familiar from comics.

First episode will likely be record breaking ratings
through sheer curiosity and all the hype, after that?

I think the level of drop off will probably have something to do with the quality of the series.  Kind of hard to exclude that variable.

True Steve. Also regarding J.B.`s initial point, it would
be brave of them to cast a 50+ woman as the the next
Doctor who isn`t traditionally `pretty`.

The new TARDIS interior photo has been released.  It looks like a cross between The Dark Crystal and an instrument from a Blue Man Group concert.

I don`t like it!
It looks claustrophobic around the console.
