Another way to repackage and sell older material, I guess?

At a dollar a pop Marvel is supposedly losing money on the True Believers reprints, but they reprint some wonderful comics that come out close to the time they are about to put out a new number one of that character/team. I would've liked to have seem more Byrne FF in their choices for the Fantastic Four reprints, but I am happy with the story they picked. Fantastic Four #232 is a great FF comic. Definitely can't go wrong with the FF #48 Coming of Galactus reprint or FF #5 either.

I do find myself wondering how a potentially new reader after reading some of these issues, how the new Fantastic Four #1 volume whatever is going to compare. It's like, hey, read some of the best Fantastic Four stories ever for a dollar and now pay 8 dollars for this 5 minute read.

Here's an article with the issues they are reprinting:

https://www.flickeringmyth.com/2018/04/marvel-celebrates-ret urn-fantastic-four-true-believers-titles/

Edit: I probably would've picked 236 over 232 if there had been one Byrne story, but I know why it was picked since most of these reprints feature historic firsts, in this case the first issue written and drawn by JB of his legendary run.

Also just noticed that I overlooked 209 which does have Byrne art at least. I definitely would've picked an issue actually written by JB over that one, like my all time favorite Fantastic Four issue, #243, although it is his first time drawing the comic which is historical.

I wonder how the sales are going.

And it is pretty nice to get some stories from the different eras of the FF served up this way. Absent buying collections--which aren't on the shelves these days in any case--you have to buy digital copies of the books or find a buddy with a really good collection if you want to read them.

I liked FF #220-221, but that's two issues, and #236 might've also been too long for their format. Two-In-One #50 would be a good single issue choice though. I've bought some of those reprints that were packaged with the dolls (oops, action figures)... Avengers #6 & 87 and X-Men #5. Having a 'True Believers' banner at the top puts me off of those, but if they colored that John Buscema Phoenix one-off story I might try and get at least that one, maybe get the Wolverine Hulk reprint as I'll never afford that original!

Rebecca, I didn't even think about 236 being over-sized. I was just trying to think of one of the best one issue FF stories, but, yeah, if these are produced at a loss I doubt they are going to go with an extra long issue.

I did buy the True Believers with the Phoenix story from Bizarre Adventures and I found the colors strange. Perhaps it was because I was used to read the b&w version or maybe the problem was that the story was pencilled to be non-colored.

there is also a true believers  JB return of Jean Grey, FF286.

I love em at my store. I get about 5 and sell 3 to regulars and put the other 2 in the dollar box. Great books for all ages for the most part so I recommend them to moms!

The latest issue of the Previews catalogue solicits True Believers reprints to celebrate the Marvel Knights imprint anniversary.

Of note is Power Man #48 by JB.

I'm also getting Marvel Premiere #15 (first Iron Fist), Daredevil #1. Amazing Spider-Man #129, Avengers #144, and Luke Cage Hero For Hire #1.

Not being a comics person any more, I was unaware of all of this, but I have to say it has some strong appeal to me.

Just picked up my first comics in over a year... four True Believers comics!  Two copies of What If? #1 (Spidey joins the FF...one for my nephew), Tales To Astonish 35/49 (Ant Man becomes Giant Man), and FF #175 (Galactus).  High quality paper, only house ads, some cover reproductions inside, seemingly nothing missing... high class all the way.  For a buck, I'd probably buy every single silver and some bronze issues I don't already have.  They had FF#5 which I have in an inferior reprint form and I now regret not buying it (I may go back).  I hope these continue!

They are even worht a couple of bucks in the secondary market. with the X-23 selling at about 10. I love em as a store owner. If someone buys one that I have a trade for I say if you like come back and I'll give your dollar back on the Trade.

I appreciate having the ability to buy a copy of something I missed back in the 1970's.

Marvel just announced another round of FF True Believers for December, and they're all Lee/Kirby reprints for a buck a piece.

#2, 8, 15, 18, 20, 35, 36, 53, 62, and 65.

The selection appears to be based on the first appearances of FF villains, minus the ones like #5 which were reprinted a few months ago.

It's funny Marvel would name this line "TRUE BELIEVERS".... it's like they're admitting that the older material is superior to the current product!

My local comic shop has these on a spinner rack at the front of the shop, and they're a great impulse buy. Buck a pop for an issue you missed the first time around, if you're not sure you want an entire trade paperback, if you just want a fun book to round out your reading pile...it's a great thing. I don't know if they're able to get these into dollar stores nationwide, but I'd love to see that catch on.
