Number of times i can remember saying "curse you" to or about anyone = zero.

Now "damn you"? When I used to play cards = too many to try to count. "Damn politician" undoubtedly even  more times. :^D

I once edited a collection of fantasy and sf stories where one was from a fairly famous author, and it was something from the '50s or early '60s, published by a publisher fairly infamous for being shoddy. The story was very good, never been reprinted outside that second rate magazine. I went through it with my Elements of Style and Strink & White's at my side, cleaned it up and sent this back to the author for their approval. They said it was probably much more correct but to reprint it exactly as it appeared. I didn't say another word about that and we did just that. If it was what the author wanted that was what mattered to me. There may have been some kind of technicality to it too though (such as where we had to put an 'originally appeared in' byline). Not one reader that I know of complained about it having strange grammar or punctuation (and loads of dashes in sentences). A lot of things published by Galaxy on the other hand have been corrected by authors afterward as editor Horace Gold was notorious for changing manuscripts.

I take it that the panel in the initial post comes from the ESSENTIAL version? I wonder when the change was made. For the CLASSIC X-MEN reprint, maybe? I only have the original issue, with the "beer" dialogue and art. As it should be!

In a related vein, I recently read (and saw a side-by-side comparison) that a panel in the first ALPHA FLIGHT CLASSICS trade removed a caption box which mentioned Aurora's abusive Catholic upbringing.

C'mon, people. Some may recall my thread in which I questioned the need to censor reprints of the earliest Wonder Woman stories, but this kind of stuff is far tamer than the cringey sterotypes which saw print the 40s.

Though I don't like the change, I do think it's a funny idea that Kurt would bring Wolverine a cola.

Heh.

Anyway, I found the panel in question, which is referenced in this article:

I misremembered. It was a case of text added to soften the impact of the caption, rather than the deletion of a caption.

Cool blog post and I also agree with his comments about modern colouring.

As Nathan pointed out that this is from a 1990’s coloring book, I think the use of the word “beer” is probably not a great idea for the target audience, which I assume is younger than the regular readership back then.  Coloring books are a different thing now, but in the 90s they were strictly kid stuff.  I think the change is fine for the context.

Ah! I somehow missed that! Didn’t notice the comment above the color panel in his post.
