Anyone know who the artist is or if it is from a comic or just a promo piece? It's from 1978. Asking as on another site a user can't seem to get any answers.

Neal Adams or his Studio. Ship design is one indicator. The inks look like Dick Giordano.

I've never seen that artwork before, but my first thought was Neal Adams.

From the other site they came up with this, a cereal poster promo

So far Curt Swat and Garcia Lopez have also been thrown out there.
Here is a close up

Yes, I would say Rich Buckler and Dick Giordano would be a good guess.

Yeah I knew it wasn't them either, that's why I came here as the guys are a bit older and way more knowledgeable when it comes to this stuff.
I thought Buckler but I remember him as more of a marvel guy.

I checked the other site, the Curt Swan and Lopez were more of a reference of the superman artists of that time and not an actual guess...so not all is lost.

At first glance, the pose looks like Joe Staton (with Giordano's inks Adams-izing the whole thing).

The close-up of the sort of "fat head" looks like what Starlin sometimes does (especially with Superman or Superboy), again with Giordano's inks.

Here's what it looks like when Giordano inks Starlin on Superman (from the Radio Shack "Whiz Kids" ad insert comic).  Note the strange-looking arm muscles, somewhat similar to the poster.
