How many well-known (or even known) transgender actors are there out there?

And if they want to argue that a non-transgender shouldn't play a transgender, then can I bite back with `If that's the case, then a transgender shouldn't play a transvestite', since Laverne Cox did that Rocky Horror Live event on FOX?

(No, I didn't actually have a problem with that, just using it as an example.)

Also left out of consideration by the outraged here is the reason why you try to get a big name actor to appear in a production.  It raises studio confidence, giving you a bigger budget and more promotion, and the actor's name draws viewers who otherwise might not hear about or be interested in a particular film.  It seems to me that if you're a trans activist, your goal would be to get a film like this in front of as many eyeballs as possible, to help bring people around to your cause.  Running off your star seems counterproductive.

Of course, that kind of point may be totally lost in today's U.S. politics, where all the concern is about 'justice', rather than about winning people over and changing minds.  More effort is put toward publicly shaming 'transphobes' than in trying to get them to accept people who identify as transgender.

It used to be a problem that some actors wouldn't want to portray LGBT etc., courageous and ground breaking that Tom Hanks or whichever big name would. Now it's at a point where one wanting to take on such a role is wrong? There's no winning. I was last involved with EGALE and PFLAG almost twenty years ago mostly about changing a few laws to help people who were just being who they are and wanting to marry and not be hassled over things others can take for granted, have things changed or is this just a momentary sideshow of no real importance?

I am a proud, old-fashioned liberal who used to eschew the "mushy, moderate middle" of politics.  HOWEVER, this kind of thing, albeit a minor example in the grand scheme of things, has caused me to seriously reconsider my views.  And to be become more than a little afraid.

While this particular controversy is a just a teeny, tiny taste of what happens when the political extremes gain too much power - I am 100% convinced that if we go TOO far RIGHT or TOO far LEFT we end up at the same place: FASCISM.

Marc, I have long argued that Fascism & Communism meet @ their ultimate goals. Both have a controlling group of ‘haves’ that control a group of ‘have nots’ through fear.

The ethical questions asked by an actor/actress taking on a role that is not them playing themselves.

An actor can play a tree if they want. The issue is not how barky their skin.

In the U.K. we have had a female play a male to female
trans person in soap Coronation Street for a number of
years, and i saw a couple of days ago, we now have a
female to male transgender person playing the same in
another soap, Emmerdale. So, it seems we are a little
more forward thinking over here.Regarding Left/Right
extremes, i read today that lecturers at a UK
university have been advised not to use the phrase `As
you know` in their lectures, in case it makes the less
intelligent students feel inferior, i thought a
certain level of intelligence was required to get into
uni? Also, is it not meant to prepare you for life in
the big bad world, rather than cosset the students?
Then i read of a guy being appalled at shower gels
being aimed at men with the word `heroic` and females
with more feminine words! George Orwell would be
saying `I told you!`

If there are transgender actors who have a hard enough time getting acting gigs anywhere else, why wouldn't they at least want to try out for roles such as the one Ms. Johanssen ultimately had to pass on?

Seems pretty important and obvious, to these eyes, anyway.

Are they not getting the roles because they are transgender? Or because they might not be a good enough actor?

look, there are sooooo many things that can be taken in to consideration when it comes to an actor getting a gig and this move to start singling out areas to prevent actors applying for roles, because they are not the same as the actual role is getting a bit rediculous.

I do wonder whether we will get to the stage where someone will complain they were not allowed to audition for a role because it was automatically given to a name actor. Discrimination! You only offer the job to people that bring in big money - how dare you?

Some things are obvious, some less so, and some things are just plain stupid to be arguing about. Saying only trans people can play trans parts in films is on the rediculous side. Saying only American blacks can play parts of American blacks in films is rediculous.

Choose your battles people, choose your battles.
(and for clarity, the battle should be representation of characters in the films rather than who gets to play them)

If Hollywood thinking has taught us anything, we can deduce Ms Johanssen was cast for two principle reasons: star power (of which she has plenty) and shock value (hot babe playing a GUY!!).

Now that she's stepped aside, is there a transgender actor who can bring her kind of clout to the role?

How about no battles? Everything is a battle somewhere these days it seems. You can't do anything without some wannabe activist picking things apart and tsk-tsk from some supposedly superior moral position. I just used a kleenex so I'm destroying the planet and should rot in hell with Hitler?

The only trans actor I thought I had ever seen was in The Crying Game, but looking the actor up just now I don't think he was. If Scarlet Johansen could play that character it would have been interesting to see, but... we'll never know.

I remember the trans character in Coronation Street as they were on it for years, maybe over a decade, sort of looked like Paul McCartney, but maybe it was the wig! One of the more fully formed characters on the show.

Wouldn't it benefit groups to have someone with star power to forward their cause. More eyes on any particular film can only increase awareness.
Shouldn't that be the goal?

Once again:

I mean, it might be possible that Scarlett Johansson would have gone through some Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos transformation in order to play a stocky transgender man, but given that she still needs to play Black Widow, I highly doubt it. This is horrible miscasting for a role more suited to someone like Lea Delaria (physically).

I don't see what that has to do with anything. I thought Leo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes couldn't work and was shown wrong. I saw Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in a still photo before the first movie and groaned! Proven wrong again.

There is the problem, when Michael Roberts suggested Lea Delaria, how many people had to look up the name to know who she was. I was thinking the same person but did not know her name. Star power gets movies made unless they want limited financial success. Yes there are exceptions to the rule.

The appropriateness of an actor cast as a comic book character or a real-life figure is a frequent point of discussion on this board. I don't see why that goes away just because there's a second issue involved.

I like Hugh Jackman. I like the character he plays in the X-Men movies. He's still horrible casting as Wolverine.

A biopic about a transgendered gangster who ran a chain of massage parlors strikes me as having limited appeal in the first place. Johansson wouldn't have been able to trade on her sex symbol status (unless the filmmakers were planning to really miss the point.)

I know this is TV-related, but I feel it is more in keeping with what we are discussing here: I just read an article on one of the comic book news-sites that says that the casting folks for the newly announced BATWOMAN (post-Crisis) television series are looking for a lesbian of any race to play Batwoman/Katherine Kane in the new series.

Now, whatever you think of it, race-neutral casting is nothing new. BUT, I have never before heard of a casting call that deliberately called out the sexual orientation of one of it's potential actors as a job requirement before!  This just seems VERY wrong to me.

But the point is we'll never know if Johansson could've pulled it off, why can't she have had the chance if she was willing to dare to take it on? I called Jackman 'Teen-Wolv' based on just the miscasting, but he did a much better job where I had expected it to be a disaster. There were things I really disliked about the X movies, expecially the third one, but I can't say he was one of those things.

Casting for a lesbian like casting for a midget? It's definitely getting stranger out there in la-la land. Only a midget could be a munchkin before special effects (then Bob Newhart could be an elf), but why can't someone play a lesbian without being one? Would you have to have actually killed someone now to play a killer? There goes John Wayne as  a green beret! :^D

Twisting into pretzels again. Silly. Hate to mention it but it's like a cake with someone else's message on it being a spiritual personal creation for the bakery. Slip slide and away U.S.A.! Sorry, that's how I see it, and I see it so clearly it hurts. I'll play a tree if I want to, it's acting, how do they get things so bloody confused and make it all about some so-called rights of people not even directly involved all the time, like the saviors of all the theoretical fetuses they could care less about when they are actual poor children trapped in limited opportunity lives then. It's not all about 'you you you' if someone else is doing something that you wanted to do or don't want to do... everything is not against you as a victim of some kind, but there are a lot of people of all extremes looking to be the outraged self-righteous victim! They are looking for it and determined to find it like messages on ecology from a gorilla, and it's junk. And the biggest most privileged victim claimer I've ever seen is president of the country. So unreal... is this really a 'what if' or bizarro front is back universe we've all accidentally stumbled into?
