So, DC's streaming Titans series has already spawned a spinoff before actually debuting.  They're developing a Doom Patrol series.  I was reasonably disinterested until the recent new that apparently they are currently in negotiations with Kelsey Grammer to play the Chief.  That alone, if it comes to pass, has may vaguely intrigued.

Me, too. He was surprisingly good as the Beast, I thought. He's a comedic actor that could have easily played the role mockingly, but he played it completely straight.

I get the feeling that any Doom Patrol adaptation that comes out now will use the psychopathic version of the Chief that engineered the accidents that resulted in the team members getting powers.

Clicking on the link, it sounded pretty good--until the part where they mention "in the aftermath of Titans" and "Cyborg calls in...."  It sounds like a SEQUEL to a show I would have preferred!  Just like BLACK LIGHTNING deals with a middle-aged principal and father of two super-powered daughters, but I would have preferred the original premise of an Olympic athlete coming back to teach at his old school controlled by drug dealers--same thing here.

Give us the original premise, not some TV people's idea of turning the premise on its head.

Hm. Well, anything that gives April Bowlby more work can't be all bad!

I use any mention of Doom Patrol as an excuse to repeat my love for
Nudge and Grunt.

Bruno Bichir looks nothing like Niles Caulder.  And unless Dwain Murphy is bandaged up 100% of the time...

Timothy Dalton has been cast in the role of The Chief/Niles Caulder. Not a bad choice IMO, certainly looks the part.

I always imagined the Chief's voice sounding like Doctor Quest's.  Voice Actor Don Messic.  I don't know if if have heard Dalton speaking with an American Accent.  I feel it is a good choice.

To be fair, Benton Quest and Niles Caulder resemble each other quite a bit, save for a chair. As for being voiced by Don Messick... absolutely. But then, Mr. Messick voiced dozens and dozens of characters, whether they were mad scientists or not. He, Daws Butler, June Foray, and Mel Brooks are probably on the Mount Rushmore of voice actors.

Timothy Dalton's acting always seems pretty intense to me... maybe a touch too intense. Then again, the Chief must be a tremendously strong character to herd Cliff and Larry, and even Rita on occasion. (One assumes Beast Boy isn't in this... Teen Titans and rights and all.)

I think a British treatment of the Chief would not work so well. But I think a female treatment would work even less. Not that anyone specifically suggested it, but it comes up sooner or later... :)

Oh, and John Y. - Timothy Dalton did a pretty devastating American accent in "The Rocketeer." Good flick.

Isn't this the third Chief casting announcement we've heard so far?  Is this final?

Matt Bomer is the voice of Negative Man, as well as playing Larry Trainor in flashbacks. Another actor will be under the bandages.

There are so many casting changes between TITANS and DOOM PATROL that I can't figure out if it's supposed to be a spin-off or not.

=======================================================

He's far from intense in "Hot Fuzz". I'd go so far as to say that in both "Hot Fuzz" and "The Rocketeer" he was given a chance to show another side to what the audience expected of him.

I like the wonky vibe.  But I have no confidence in the DCU folks anymore after Titans.  Also, I still don't know why Cyborg is there.

Stargirl's recent casting news actually has me really tempted, for the first time, to sign up for DCU.  If that continues to look good, and I sign up for it, I'll probably give Doom Patrol a look.

Just guessing, but they may have felt they needed a Titan and with Beast Boy over in Titans, Cyborg inexplicably left out there, and Ray Fisher big on the big screen, they may have felt the best way to go, Titan-wise, was for Cyborg.

Robotman's head could have used some puppetry.

You're probably right, vis a vis Cyborg, but unlike Beast Boy, there seems to be an inordinate amount of overlap between him and Robotman as characters.
