Dear Everyone,

I am 47 years old and have been smoking since I was 19 years old.  Although I have tried a few times in the past, I have resolved once and for all to QUIT SMOKING!

I have tried cold turkey - and failed.  I have tried the nicotine gum - and failed.  In reality, I was just not ready to quit, the bottom line was I enjoyed smoking too much.  I have reached a point where not only am I concerned about my health, but I am starting to NOT enjoy it as much as I used to.  Feelings such as the latter don't come along very often, so I want to strike while the iron is hot!

I went out today and purchased the nicotine patches - which, as I understand it, requires that you NOT smoke while you are wearing them.  I have spent the last few days cutting down the amount I have been smoking and have been pretty successful.

I know this is a forum about JB-related topics, but I also know that threads have been permitted in the past about personal issues affecting JB forum members (loss of loved ones, loss of beloved pets, medical issues, struggles, etc.) - I hope I am not breaking any rule by asking for your thoughts, advice and support at this time.

Thank you!
Marc

Good luck with giving up your smoking habit. I did a similar thing a few years ago with weight loss when I lost 3 stones.
As a good friend of mine said recently “giving up smoking is easy, I’ve done it hundreds of times”
Joking aside, I wish you success
I once read that the first 3 weeks of giving up anything is the hardest and if you can get over that hump it becomes easier. It worked for me.

Good luck Marc, after 40+ years my wife is just in the process of giving up and is trying the patches first.  My understanding is that they are meant to reduce the cravings for cigarettes over three steps gradually reducing over several weeks but you can still smoke with them (that's here in the UK, might work differently where you are). She also has the desire to quit this time which I believe is the most important factor.

I'll certainly be thinking about you and your efforts.

Good luck, Marc, it won't be easy, I'm sure, but I know you can do it.

I'm one of those irritating people who smoked a pack a day for years and then one day just stopped. Only had urges for a few days and then it faded away. I find cold turkey quite easy. Now moderation, that's very hard for me. Good luck.
