Hey, in Roddenberry’s original pitch, Robert April was assigned to patrol the galaxy’s “Ninth Quadrant”!

I know, right?
As I've often mentioned, part of the genius of TOS was that the technology and the terminology so often came across as believable, even if it didn't hold up to close scrutiny.
Heck, Shatner convincingly sold that line about the ship's audio booster amplifying Finney's heartbeat by "one to the fourth power" in "Court Martial"!

Heh. One to the fourth power. I never noticed that before.

Every speck of light is a galaxy.
"Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space."

And yet, yet another article has been released featuring scientist speculating that we are all alone. . . .

Humanity is "special"?
I never put much trust in such articles, we can only see a small part of the observational universe plus we have yet to figure out every way a possible intelligent species that uses technology would communicate with another.
Then there is still the speed of light limit. If FTL does not exist (likely) super luminal communication does also not exist. Any possible interstellar communication would be through laser (or radiation or gravity pulses?) and our detection equipment or satellites would have to be at the right place and the right time to be able to intercept any kind of message.
For all we know there may be an intelligent species on the other side of the galaxy that is also working on space travel but the chances of us actually meeting is so astronomically small.
Also plenty of other theories why intelligent technology using species might never meet each other during the lifespan of a culture/civilization. It is either rare and they tend to go extinct before another one arises. We just can not recognize each other (what if the intelligence of another space faring species is on such a different level that it does not recognize individuals). An intelligent species sees little point in exploring space beyond their own star system because of the light speed limit other than the occasional probe.
It doesn't even require a super predator/killer civilization that wipes out any possible competing civilization or periodic interstellar cataclysms that wipe out life on the galactic level.

That map is awesome!!
I loved TOGTTMU guides, if shooter was a big part of them then my imaginary hat is off to him. I though of them just as guides though, not definitive(no matter if they were intended that way or not).. For instance I could tell. you that my personal limit for lifting weight is 200 pounds....however if my loved one's life was threatened could I perhaps lift more? I would bet so. They're just guides.

"Tremble, Earthlings! Tremble before the unparalleled might and terrible informational power of TOGTTMU! Once the covers to all twelve of my issues are assembled in order, you shall see a vision of the Universe the likes of which you have never imagined!"
"I defy you, TOGTTMU! And I defy the accuracy of your reporting! This poster from the very near future shows that Hannigan and Rubinstein are going to have to redraw MANY of the characters in order to keep pace with the changing state of the MU! And so it shall continue! Forever! You will NEVER be definitive, TOGTTMU! NEVER!!"
