When thinking back on "comics/cartoons to movie adaptations" that did their best to be "comic/cartoon accurate" a few movies come to mind...Popeye, the Flintstones, Scooby Doo, Dick Tracy and....

I grew up watching the cartoon back in the early 70's and, though I wasn't a car/race fan, there was just something about the cartoon that I quite enjoyed: the unique Mach 5 and other specialized vehicles, the mysterious Racer X and a fun loving chimp! When the movie came out 10(!) years ago I saw it in the theater, I bought the DVD when it came out and I just finished watching it again today (for the first time in a long while) on Netflix. I won't deny that I still enjoyed it and I even got a lump in my throat at the end credits with the update version of the cartoon's theme song (nostalgia kicking in).

Was this the best cartoon movie adaptation? No, but it was one of the better one's IMO. Visually it is stunning, full of color explosion and fun imagery. Seeing the Mach 5 do its thing live is a blast!

What are your thoughts and what other movies of this genre did you enjoy?

I LOVE Speed Racer.  I think it is severely underrated.  Way too much unwarranted hated of it, IMO.

Count me among the many who did not enjoy this movie.

I like the overall look of it just fine, and I believe that a good movie could have resulted from all of the same elements being in place if they'd been used differently. The movie we got however is blinding, edited with a salad shooter, and has a long, ropey script with little or no point. Just the hokey-pokeying done with identity of Racer X is enough to induce a nosebleed.

Since the film took place at the height of Hollywood's love affair with fishtailing and "Tokyo Drift," I kept waiting for the family to design a car the likes of which no one in this film had ever seen before or even imagined... A car... that could drive... wait for it... STRAIGHT. Not side-to-side and wibbly-wobble for interminable periods of time at every turn, but could actually drive the direction in which it was pointed. My god, in the world of this film, a car that could actually go FORWARD would have been an engineering marvel no other vehicle could have beaten!

Had very little familiarity with the cartoon, hated the
movie because the script was awful. The Watchowski
siblings haven`t really lived up to their potential from
Bound and the first Matrix.
