I have noted before that I have been, more or less, a casual viewer of STAR TREK. This would include all variations, from TOS onward. The original series and "The Next Generation," along withe the motion pictures, are mostly what I have watched over the years, though. From the first time I saw Q on TNG, he seemed like STAR TREK's own version of Mr. Mxyzptlk in that he was an all-powerful being that seemed to be mostly mischievous.

Not having seen every episode with the Q character, and having never read the novels and such, is this a fair comparison to you guys?

There was some fan conjecture (and one TNG novel) that connected Trelane from "The Squire of Gothos" with the Q continuum

Mr. Mxyzptlk always seemed to be harmless and just trying to make mischief for Superman.

Q seemed to be superior morally (well, in EVERY way) to the Star Trek crews... but also treating them as one might an ant farm. His actions eventually seemed to be him trying to help the Enterprise, in his own supercilious way.

So I wouldn't say that they're an exact match. Somewhat similar, but that's about it.

Been saying it since Season 1 of TNG. While watching a Q episode
with a buddy, I said, “Maybe if they tricked him into saying his name
backwar...oh...”

I quite liked the Trelane connection idea.

I'd agree with Eric Sofer. As well as the mischievous element, which often came to the fore, there was also a kind of judgemental side to Q, which the character began with and to which they returned in the final story of the TV run.

When did Q lose his definite article, btw?

I think the definite article is still used when referring to the entire continuum, but an individual Q is just Q.

The Q is a whole continuum... but sometimes, a Q is just a Q... especially when they line up.
