We went to see it Saturday afternoon.

Phoenix will get an Oscar nom for this.

The film was well made, and the story was compelling.  The violence is nowhere near as bad as has been stated.  I would compare it to the Godfather movies in how graphic it could be, but not in sheer numbers.

The parts of the movie that attach to comic lore did not work for me, but I am sure it will work for many.

I feel that many Batman Film Fans will call this the definitive Joker Origin and that is sad, because that shows how little they understand the Joker.

All that being said, I did not dislike the film.  It was very well done.

The audience clapped at the end.  That says a lot. You usually don't get that at the matinee.

If you saw the trailer, you already made up your mind: either you accept this or you don't. And both choices are fine.

Strictly speaking, there's nothing new about this movie. It's basically a movie about old movies, and that's okay because media is one of its themes. There's this crazy irony of doing Taxi Driver with a comic book character, but it's kind of inevitable because, it seems, nowadays you can only make movies with them. In its way, it's the opposite of the latest Rambo. Even the dumbest subplot (SPOILERS: Batman and Joker are brothers) is a commentary because it's the kind of stupidity you might expect (as in Spectre). It even has its dumb "explosive" climax (that luckily doesn't drag for half an hour).

It's filled with childish jokes (the Zorro young Bruce watches that night is The Gay Blade), Phoenix is great and the whole thing is very watchable. During most of it, the audience was completely silent, and when he finally became the Joker they started responding, with shock and laughter, as it should be.

Batman & the Joker are brothers? BROTHERS?

I had decided not to see this movie for a number of reasons. This has just become reason number one.

They pull back. But leave the possibility open.

That’s enough for me. Shouldn’t even be a hint, the faintest wiff in this direction

It is left open and it is part of the joke. As if the filmmakers are saying: "What? Did you really believe that crap? Hahahaha. Did you really think we are that dumb? Hahahaha. Well, maybe we are! Hahahaha!"

The question that has to be asked is this: after Taxi Driver came out
and shocked everyone, were there any tangible improvements to the
way loners/mentally disturbed people were treated? Or was it just
beautifully executed but ultimately cheap titillation for the masses? Is
the Joker movie any different? Is it any different to rubbernecking as we
drive by a particularly bad car accident?
