As table top gamer, I've played all the editions of D&D and now play Pathfinder. For me the game, story or editions never decided in what type of character class I would choose. Each time when I'm starting a new game and character, I come up with a character persona in mind. I then use whatever class I believe best fits that character.
I've played them all except a Druid (got to try sometime) and with Cleric being the most frequent.

Eric, I remember that list very well!

I also remember plenty of "creative" character stats and off-the-cuff rules adjudication. In the three or four years I was seriously into RPGs, I played with two semi-overlapping groups of friends, and the regular DMs in both groups were very much of the story-over-rules school. The emphasis was on an interesting game, whether it came to character generation or gameplay. They would definitely pull out the rulebook when needed--usually when a player decided to be a jailhouse lawyer about something--but in the normal course of a game, they would keep it going and keep it interesting.

I consider myself lucky, because those were some fun games. Not to say that playing with a rule-obsessed DM couldn't be fun, but I wouldn't have wanted to do it!

Story-over-rules - that's the DM I want. (Mostly because I had memorized more rules than they did, and I could outfox them. Oddly, I didn't play often with those DMs....)
