I'm a Paladin. However, I always played a Ranger.

"For those that played DnD, did you choose characters that you felt were more inline with you naturally?"

For me, there was never really any conscious thought in that regard - I just liked the power set and visual of a Ranger. However, in thinking about it, playing a literal Robin Hood, defender of the downtrodden, enemy of the corrupt/bullies...that's a nice ideal after all.

I liked to be the Swiss Army Knife character. My first D&D character was a fighter/magic-user/thief. I was also fond of a ranger/cleric character.
Since a bard is a sort of fighter/thief/druid - or at least, it used to be - I suppose that carries on the tradition.

By this I came out as a Fighter or Barbarian depending on how civilized I choose to believe I am.
I generally played thieves, which isn't in line with me, per se, but is definitely in line with the kind of characters I enjoyed.

I was either a Fighter or Paladin. Lawful Good alignment, I just loved the whole "honor and duty" thing.
Though 1 time I played my Brother's less than honorable Thief on a campaign. I did him proud, it was fun to let the dark side out for a bit.

I normally played a ranger or wizard but I ended up with a Druid.

Ah yes, the triple threat. I had a couple all purpose characters as well.
I recalled over the past few days that the one character I leveled up the highest was my wizard. Just remembered that. Then a Paladin.

I got Cannon Fodder. I didn't even think D&D had cannons. It doesn't have Warlocks, either. Not real D&D! Nope.

Yeah a lot has changed. I think when I played it was the 3.5 rules. Now the 5e rules are changed so much that I see the differences clearly, even with my questionable memory. It certainly looks like they have expanded the character classes to compete with other games, like Pathfinder.
It's also so expensive to buy the rules. Anywhere between $25 to 50 per book. $150 just for the 3 core books. Damn.

Wizard, which is what I usually played. Except, back in my day, we called them magic-users! (And that was good enough for us, and we liked it.)

Ted, I'll bet you remember this list too...
Cleric Druid Fighter Paladin Ranger Magic-User Illusionist Thief Assassin Bard Monk
Stat and race restrictions and all. (We used to cheat the hell out of Stat restrictions... if someone in the party wanted to be a Paladin, we just gave 'em an 18 to use for CHA and be done with it.)
I can't say it's better or worse now, but I kinda miss the idea of someone saying they want to try an action, and the DM would just have 'em roll to determine if they made it or not. "I made my role!" bugs me a little bit now... I don't WANT my players to know if they succeeded or not.
