When a writer suggests killing a character, an editor should suggest killing the writer to see if he can come back in 3 years or so.

••

Reminds me of a cure Frank Miller suggested years ago, for artists who constantly crop their figures badly. "Let's crop THEM the same way," said Frank.

My reaction would be either to yawn, he'll be back, or kill 'em all and let's create all new stuff (but then that could turn out to be another 'New Universe').

Nobody dies forever in comics. This is a non-story.

I think the article is all marketing misdirection. Pump up the hysteria so more folks get the book.

"Buy this issue; it's sure to be a future historically important artifact in the unfolding mythologic cosmology of super literature. Better yet, seriously collect all seven variant covers, one foil hologram, plus one signed and numbered edition with certificate of comparative reality."

The house of few ideas left?

Nothing matters at Marvel anymore.

They actually ran that as an ad.  They were proud of it.  I thought it was tongue in cheek...until they had Captain America say "Hail Hydra."  Then they were proud of ticking off their loyal readers.  For the last two or three years, we are looking at the ghost of Marvel Comics.  It's like the spirit of the company has migrated to the movie screen (along with Stan Lee "presenting" each one with his cameos).  Dumping the classic alter egos and making everything look like an independent spoof comic, the comic company doesn't even WANT to be Marvel Comics anymore.

Quesada once said (I want to say in his old Cup O' Joe column at CBR) that when Bendis came to him with an idea to kill a character*, he would ask Bendis how he would feel if someone had a story that hinged on killing off Jessica Jones.

*This lead me to believe that this was a regular occurrence.

Killing a character is no longer edgy or novel; it's trite. It's far past time to do something else.

Part of the problem is an audience full of people who've been around too long. When the "lifespan" of an average reader was five or 6 years, death could still be played for shock.

"Under Marvel's current rules?"

John, did you once say or did I once read that you got
credit for Alpha Flight and Chris got credit for New
Mutants in some kind of agreement or something?

Steer me straight. Thanks!

••

Since the whole "second team of students" was my idea (starting with Kitty), Shooter expressed concern that I might make some claim on the New Mutants. I said if Chris would make no such claim toward Alpha Flight, I would make none toward NM.
