If it's words, it's mine, if it's pictures, it's Mignola's. The pictures came first.

Cool, thanks for the answer. I got a kick out of that, travelling through West Brom most days of the week.

I've also just recently read several Hellboy stories, and was intrigued by the word/picture dynamic of the first series.  JB frequently uses the term "art robot" to describe (at least as I understand it) the role of an artist not involved in the plot of a story, and his credit on Hellboy got me wondering if an equivalent role- a script robot, so-to-speak, is possible for a writer; particularly when a character is just being introduced.
How much of a character's personality is created and defined in the words he speaks?  This is a question I pose to the whole board, but specifically for JB, I'm curious if there's anything interesting you could share about your process of writing dialogue for Hellboy.

Me, too. I really liked the Byrne/Mignola combo every time they worked together.

Coincidentally (?), Hellboy Omnibus TP Vol. 01 Seed of Destruction, was released this month, containing those issues and more.

Hellboy Omnibus Volume 1: Seed of Destruction
Available in comic stores on May 23rd and in bookstores on June 5, 2018.

The story jumps from Hellboy's mysterious World War II origin to his 1994 confrontation with the man who summoned him to earth, and the earliest signs of the plague of frogs. Avoiding his supposed fate as the herald of the end of the world, Hellboy continues with the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, fighting alongside Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and drafting Roger Homunculus into his own ill-fated service with the B.P.R.D. This 368-page volume covers Hellboy’s adventures from 1994 to 1997, reprinting Seed of Destruction, Wake the Devil, and “Wolves of St August,” “The Chained Coffin,” and “Almost Colossus,” from The Chained Coffin and The Right Hand of Doom.

Mignola asked me to give HELLBOY its "voice" -- which I did.
