After 28 years, this came across my
eyeballs again. In the most glorious way
possible, this movie is terrible. There
are child actors who are there as comedy
relief. They are, but due to bad acting.
The dialogue is appalling and most of the
monsters are just goofy.

So, what makes it glorious? This movie
knows what it is. It makes no bones about.
"We are a terrible movie, now sit back and
enjoy it."

If you actually want to say something good
about it, Swamp Thing's suit is a HUGE
improvement over the Wes Craven one.

So, if you want a stupid, terrible, cheesy
movie, The Return Of Swamp Thing would fit
the bill.

Fond memories of watching the 1982 SWAMP THING on cable many, many times.  Never bothered with the sequel... looked too goofy at the time, as I recall.  Plus, I think it went direct-to-video?

Anyway, maybe it's finally time to dig it up and see about renting (or streaming) it.  Could be fun, could be painful!

I did quite like the original.

Like Shaun, I have never seen the sequel though I did have an issue of Cinefantastique from 1989 with a feature on the film and I remember being impressed with how great the suit looked (and also how pretty Heather Locklear looked).

The original has its heart in the right place and isn't a bad film for what it is. I do wish the money had been there to film the script as it was originally presented to the actors. In her book, Adrienne Barbeau describes the script as beautiful and heartfelt. Some of that made it to the screen, but a lot of sets were never built and scenes were never filmed, with more and more chase footage and battles with Arcane's henchmen shot instead to fill out the running time since those elements were already in place.

The all-out comedy sequel doesn't interest me. I haven't even brought myself to read the Peter David novelization which reportedly has only a passing association with the film.

I think the greatest thing about seeing Return Of The Swamp Thing in a theater was the opening credits with giant Berni Wrightson comic art and Born On The Bayou blasting away. Right there you got your money's worth, but you are right, it actually was a fun 'bad' movie wasn't it?

For those thinking it's a full on comedy,
it's not. It's has it's funny moments but
isn't a full out comedy. It's just so bad
that it plays like one.

Now, understand, I'm the guy who still
loves Megaforce and Legend Of The Lone
Ranger.

If someone put a gun to my head and forced
me to watch The Return of Swamp Thing or a
Schumacher Batman movie, I'm taking Swamp
Thing. At least it knows what it is.
