My return to doing this thread on a weekly basis will be short and sweet.  AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR opened to a massive record breaking $250 mil domestic and $380 mil international for a total of $630 mil worldwide.  It broke the records for largest single Saturday and Sunday gross, April opening, largest Spring opening and fastest to $150, $200 and $250 million.  One of the most shocking things about this massive haul is that it got there without opening in China, the largest foreign market.  BLACK PANTHER also got a boost as it hopped back into the top five and marked only the second time in Marvel's history where two films resided there.  The last was in 2008 with IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

Studios stayed away from this weekend and are only opening a couple of films in limited release next weekend, so the juggernaut of Disney/Marvel will have very little competition with regard to similar action movies until DEADPOOL 2 opens May 18.

Here, as always, are the weekend domestic estimates courtesy of our friends at Box Office Mojo:

A quarter of a BILLION dollars in one weekend... I remember when a box office total of $100 million was a HUGE deal.

I don't understand how comics have become a huge hit in
the movie industry, and yet they have made no advances
in making comics mainstream.

I guess the digital distribution is one thing, but I
would like a more netflix approach, or even better a
youtube approach. Stream all the comics with adds. (if
this is already being attempted, I am not aware of it).

Iíve been posting on Facebook about the enormous gap in earnings between first & second place for total earnings in USA for 2018. Black Panther was number 1 with over 600 million & a quiet place was number 2 with around 148 million. Just think of that drop.

Now here comes Infinity war. Really, Marvel rule the roost @ the moment, & not by a small margin.

Internationally, again, you have Black Panther @ around 1.3 billion & then second & third, each with around 500 million are two Chinese films where 98% of their earnings came from China. & then another drop.

The film industry/viewing is getting weird.

Ps sorry for the @ & etc, my seven year old son likes to reprogram me shortcuts into my iPad

Glad to see this thread back, Matt. Thanks to you, as always, for the effort. It is appreciated.

I think Bob Iger probably has nightmares where he is given the option of buying Marvel and turns it down. He wakes up in a cold sweat. His wife asks him what's wrong. "Wrong?" he says. "Oh, nothing is wrong." And then he chuckles, a chuckle of world-dominating proportions.

Amazing that Disney holds the strings to Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel and it is Marvel that is king.

FYI JUSTICE LEAGUE was in release for 17 weeks and grossed a worldwide total of $657.9 mil.  After five days in release, INFINITY WAR has surpassed it by nearly $75 mil with a total worldwide gross, as of Monday, of $725.5 mil.

Good to know that BLACK PANTHER is still showing in theaters. I have yet to see it, and if I'm going to get around to seeing INFINITY WAR once the hoopla dies down a bit, I ought to see that first.

BLACK PANTHER is scheduled to be released on Home Digital next week, DVD and Blu-Ray the week after that.

So, there will be plenty of opportunty to see it while INFINITY WAR is still in theaters....

I still insist these superhero movies would be just as successful if they were faithful to the source material. And that just makes me sad.

A lot of people i know booked seats then attended
midnight showings to avoid spoilers, so i guess there`s
a lot of people seeing it numerous times! One friend has
seen it four times already!

Now you can add "fastest to $1 billion" to the list of records INFINITY WAR has broken.  It will reach that milestone either tonight or tomorrow, which would be in 10 or 11 days.  That beats the previous record holder STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, which did it in 12 days back in 2015.

Reminds me of this thread where there was contention over whether 21 says would be enough time for an Avengers sequel (not this one!) to make a billion bucks: LINK

I'm waiting for the early crowds to die down a little before heading to see Avengers 3. Will probably try and see it sometime next week.

It's Marvel's world, now.  We're just livin' in it.
