What was it about those humans that gave you the impression they'd learned ANYTHING?

Humanity is the worst thing that ever happened to this planet.

Humans think we're the most important thing in the UNIVERSE!

The universe is ignorant of this, of course.

I love that Carlin bit. He's essentially right. We cause a lot of damage to nature on this planet, and ultimately ourselves, but the planet is going to be here a billion years from now. We probably won't.

Come on, don't be like that! A lot of religious people think that true Christians should take care of Creation, me included.

And a lot of religious people (many of them in positions of power) think that Jesus will return to save us before things get REALLY bad. Which goes a long way toward explaining how things have gotten to this point.

Sergio, I know there are Christians who consider themselves custodians. That's good. But Don makes a good point (I know you agreed with him just now). There has been a variation, from some, that says, "We'll look after the planet, but don't sweat it, no matter how bad things get, God will handle it."

The novel ISHMAEL makes a similar point. Deep down many of us believe we are far too important in the grand scheme of things for the gods to allow anything REALLY bad to happen to us.

Actually, I was responding to that. Yes, there are lots religious people who do not care about the environment and some of them even find "pious" pretexts, and there are lots of religious people who think taking care of the environment is part of our ethics.
I do not think religion is a key factor related to this. People in positions of power have always been good at making up excuses, and a lot of people not in positions of power do not care of  things that do not have immediate consequences.
I think the history of Easter Island is paradigmatic of this human stupidy about our environment.

(spelling corrected)

Regarding the WALL-E digression, I came away from that movie thinking:
1) it's an awfully bleak start
2) finding ONE plant alive on the planet is no proof that the biosphere is now capable of supporting plant life (much less animal life)
3) did they have a storehouse of viable plant and animal DNA after 700+ years in space?
4) sure is a good thing that this group of flabby and physically disabled "humans" had armies of robots to help them... and
5) seems like the Axiom didn't hold billions of people, so the returning population was--what, millions, at most? A small fraction of our planet's peak population, anyway. Which means they *might* have been able to restart a sustainable civilization, but give it another few hundred years and they'd be leaving on space arks again.
