I loved the WHAT THE--?! spoofs of the Charles Atlas ads. It first one with the Iron Man armor was probably the best.

(edit: found it!)

You`re welcome Robbie, it`s a good book, but may shatter
your expectations of what those adverts promised!

Edited to add:-Even as a kid i knew the sea monkey was
not an aquatic primate because David Attenborough hadn`t
featured such a creature on his documentaries!

They did make me smile. 'X-ray' specs? Yeah, right...

I think there was one such as "Grow Your Own Alien" or something similar...

Would the Charles Atlas ad be considered homoerotic just because it has men in trunks?

The whole point of the ad is to win the girl.

Dave - I've run across a couple of comics with that ad (or one similar). And yes, that's what I had heard - they were inserted for comics sold on military bases, etc. They certainly weren't intended for the drug store spinner rack!

When I was a kid I bought comics on a military base, because that's where I lived. Not too many American comics to be found in the Japanese town next to the base. Haha foiled again, publishers!!!!!

Good grief Tom. Nice to see you post.
Maybe I've missed something but I haven't

I never believed all those ads. Except Sea Monkeys. Totally real!

I was flipping through some early FF's and I'm amazed at the number of vocational ads. Not sure there's a market for 10 year old mechanics and electronics repairmen. The other popular one is sales jobs. Would you buy shoes from a kid?

While I found this a compelling comic strip at 10 years old, I don't think the ad was directed at me!

I did!  More than any of the other ads in this thread, the Charles Atlas ad played directly into the childhood fantasy of becoming strong enough to take down your bully. It was Peter Parker/Spider-Man but in "real life". It was aimed directly at kids!
