I've always been confused by that video. Of course you see what you're supposed to see, how can you miss it? Then again, I see the robotic zombies all around me, face plastered to their phones, completely oblivious to everything around them and then I kind of see what happens.

As for the article, it reminds me of Arthur C Clarke Childhood's End. The Overlords were so vastly superior to humans we could barely comprehend them and there was the Overmasters who the Overlords could not comprehend. Like an Ant discussing a whale to his buddy. No common words to describe it.

Honestly, I was fooled, even going in expecting the ape-guy to show up. I didn't even notice him waving.

From the article... I think this is a little like the way serendipity occurs.

One can't just do a generic experiment and expect good results. You start with a theory, set up tests and conditions, and then run experiments to prove that theory, and modify the theory to fit the results of the tests. (Or, if one is a BAD scientists/experimenter, makes the facts match the theory. But I digress...)

But when one is focused on the results of the tests - a perfectly legitimate point of view - what about the non-significant occurrences? I think that's what this is about. Humans are made to focus ("zoom lens") or take in a big picture ("wide angle") - but we can't do both at once. I'll compare it to a complicated drawing by Mr. Byrne. I can see the details (e.g., the Lizard's tail) or I can see the full diorama (Batman fighting a spate of Spider-Man's foes) - but I can't appreciate both at once.

Of course, if someone is checking all results of an experiment, then the odd elements should show up too. That's a little hard when time is a factor, though... unfortunately, much research is for a directed purpose, so "free time" to check those other results is restricted.

And when I notice four or five of Mr. Byrne's drawings fit together to form one image... well, there's my serendipity.

There are five people wearing white and there may be seven wearing white, but I cannot confirm because their outer clothes cover their inner clothes, if any. There is no gorilla.

I did notice the gorilla but was off the count by one and had not see the wave either. Hmmm.

We seem to be focusing on the wrong part of the article!

Carl Sagan's popularizing the SETI goal was always measured by his wise instance that we absolutely not attempt to think exclusively of non-earthly life as anything akin to merely the "weirdest" forms of earthly life. These authors seem similarly wise, at least judging from the abstract to their full article: "We discuss the role of new physics including dark matter and string theory in the search for life and other non terrestrial intelligence. A new classification for non terrestrial civilizations with three types and five dimensions is also provided."

There was some news on some star that they speculated
had some artificial structures blocking the light of the
star, it has a mysterious blink to it that they couldn't
figure out.

What if that is some alien race trying to signal us (or
anyone) by making their star blink?

Thomas - possibly some close orbiting planet or natural satellites in a regular orbit? Not to say that it is not a signal created by intelligent beings. On the other hand... could it be a regular orbit by unintelligent life that happens to survive in vacuum?
