Watching a random TNG episode, and checking the IMDb to get me up to speed. As I looked up the quotes, Patrick Stewart spoke the exact words on screen.

The odds on anything are 50/50. Either it happens, or it doesn't!

Ha! You're right.
Of course Vegas would beg to differ.

Does that mean there is a God or does that mean there isn't one?

Or both?

:-)

If God did not exist it would be necessary to invent him -- so we did.

JUST had a similar coincidence this morning.  Reading an article on the AV Club about the Pink Panther movies, and not five minutes later getting in my car and turning to WBGO (the local jazz station) just as the last few bars of Henry Mancini's theme are playing.

Years ago I read that the odds of being dealt a Royal Flush in poker are exactly the same a being deal any other hand. If we put the same significance on, say, Ace, 2, 5, Jack, Queen, we'd see that "special" combination was just as "rare" as a Royal Flush.

(And since I know from nothing about poker, if A25JQ actually IS significant, choose your own combo for this!)

If they’re all the same suit, that’s a pretty good flush.

Something similar has happened to me (not pertaining to TNG). Sometimes you can be reading something - and scenarios like the one mentioned above can be a bit freaky.

Won't make me a believer, though. Short of an entity appearing in my flat, I don't think anything could...

I often experience little things like that, reading a
music magazine and a song by the band i`m reading about
comes on the radio...of course it`s a rock magazine and
i`m listening to a rock station which increases the
odds! Or thinking of a friend and at that moment, they
phone me.

There's a little bit of wordplay here that's crucial.

Your chances of being dealt a Royal Flush in spades is exactly the same as any other hand.

However, there are four possible Royal Flushes (from four suits), so your chances of being dealt *a* Royal Flush (of any suit) is a little bit different.

For other hands there are more possible combinations making a 'lesser' hand of some combination more likely to be dealt.

As an example, there are 9 possible Straight Flushes for each suit (10, if you count the Royal Flush which is technically the highest Straight Flush).   So you are 9 times more likely to be dealt a Straight Flush of any suit versus a Royal Flush of any suit.

I'll do one more with the next highest hand.

There are 13 possible Four-of-a-Kinds, each of these can have one of 12 possibilities for the fifth card that doesn't matter.  You are 156 (13x12) times more likely to be dealt a Four-of-a-Kind than a Royal Flush of any suit.

But your chances of being dealt four 10s with a 3 of hearts is exactly the same as being dealt a Royal Flush in spades.
