Interestingly enough, America football and Thanksgiving kind of midwived each other, and all due to the Industrial Revolution. See, the Industrial Revolution made it possible for even low income families to own dining tables with matching chairs, as well as matching silverware. This encouraged more "family dinners," and really bolstered the popularity of Thanksgiving. Then, Football, back in those days when sports were actually seasonal, latched onto T'Day as "their" holiday -- go see a local game, then have a big dinner (or vice versa).
