Picked up a used CD of TV theme songs today at the iconic Amoeba Music store here in Hollywood.  I own a ton of theme song collections as they're favorites of mine.  So in this vein, list your top ten favorite theme songs from any genre.  I'm giving you TEN, quite a few, so don't slip in 11 by virtue of ties or honorable mentions.  Ten straight up.  Less is OK (although how you couldn't come up with ten would be beyond me) but more is decidedly not OK.

Ground rules set.

Go.

Great topic, Matt.

1.) AIRWOLF
2.) KNIGHT RIDER
3.) STREET HAWK
4.) THE A-TEAM
5.) STINGRAY (the 60s puppet show)
6.) MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE
7.) SPACE: 1999 (Season 1 theme)
8.) THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN
9.) STAR TREK: TNG
10.) WONDER WOMAN

Sylvester Levay's AIRWOLF theme is top-notch. I was so pleased, years ago, when a fan got permission from Universal to do an Airwolf themes CD.

And Tangerine Dream's STREET HAWK theme somehow (I know this'll be a contradiction) manages to be very 80s but also timeless, too.

Assuming we can use songs that were later used as TV themes, and not just songs created as themes:

Peter Gunn

Andy Griffith (The Fishing Hole)
The Green Hornet (Flight Of The Bumble Bee)
Route 66
The Littlest Hobo (Maybe Tomorrow)
Jeeves and Wooster Theme
The Greatest American Hero (Believe It Or Not)
The Pink Panther

I sometimes watch the beginning of the new Hawaii Five-O just to hear the theme song.

The Herculoids

This would be a post I would constantly edit as more themes I loved get mentioned and I get reminded. But here goes anyway

Tomorrow people
Doctor Who (from the Ď70ís)
Space 1999 (season 1)
Battlestar Galactica (the reboot)
Airwolf
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Ultraviolet (the U.K. vampire series)
Wild horses
Babylon 5 (I suppose I have to choose which season as they were all different. Even though I liked them all, I would say season 3 is my ultimate favourite)

I will come back with my final one after looking at my iPod

Also making the assumption that we are not limited to songs and can included regular instrumental themes:

1. The Waltons -- Jerry Goldsmith
2. Monkey (Gandhara) -- Godiego
3. Barnaby Jones -- Jerry Goldsmith
4. Cheers (Where Everybody Knows Your Name) --Gary Portnoy
5. Mission Impossible -- Lalo Schifrin
6. Space 1999 -- Barry Gray
7. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. -- Jerry Goldsmith
8. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Journey of the Sorcerer) -- Bernie Leadon
9. North and South -- Bill Conti
10. Knots Landing -- Jerrold Immel

Edited to correct my no. 10 -- I put the right composer down, but the wrong title. Now changed to the right thing!

Iíve already thought of three themes that could take my final slot, two of which have been mentioned in posts subsequent to my first post. This one will be difficult as I donít want to change any of my first post choices as I would see that as cheating. More to come.

There have been some wonderful choices in peopleís lists though. Some really nice theme tunes that I can hear in my head as I read your lists.

I can do this, but not in any particular order. Would take me a while to rank them:

1. Batman
2. Mission: Impossible (Original)
3. Knight Rider (original series)
4. Doctor Who (specifically the version shared by Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker)
5. Twilight Zone
6. Airwolf
7. Challenge of the Super-Friends
8. Hogan's Heroes
9. Rawhide
10.Get Smart

Decided on my final choice.

Edge of Darkness - this won out for the sheer scale of the theme, haunting.

But man was that hard to make. I could easily keep going, and going and going. Think we could do with a general thread on TV music that people could recommend to be tried out. Off to the music section I go.

MAUDE
FALCON CREST
DYNASTY

(edited)- and I would have added "China Beach" but it was a pre-existing pop song: "Reflections" by The Supremes and not original.
