Scott Dunbier at IDW kindly forwarded to me comp copies of the Ross Andru SPIDER-MAN and Gene Colan DRACULA AEs.

Well worth having, especially the Colan volume, where Tom Palmer's glorious inks stand out so well in black and white. The volume includes some pencil scans in the back, so one can really get a sense of how much Tom brought to the job.

I feel that Andru's run on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is highly underrated!

My thoughts, too, Greg.

I have fond memories of Mr Andru's SUPERMAN VS THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Andru gets lost in the shuffle of great artists to draw
Spider-Man but I think he's right up there with the
best. Very fond memories of his ASM run.

I've seen an ESSENTIALS volume of Andru's work on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. He was very, very good at making Marvel New York look like the real New York of the 1970s.

But surprisingly for a Spider-Man artist his work was kind of, I dunno, stiff. Same with his Superman work for DC. This matters somewhat less for Superman, but on Spider-Man, "flow" is everything.

I love the Essentials of Dracula, I think they look much better than the colour reprints. I'm definitely going to have to get the Artist edition though.

I've not seen the Andru one but the Colan one is great!  When I saw it it made me wish the original comic was printed in black and white!

I agree that Andru's style was a bit stiff, especially for Spider-Man, but I had a soft spot for his work ever since the days of METAL MEN.

Ross Andru was the artist on the first comic I "bought"* (I was 6, not a lot of income streams) -- Amazing Spider-Man #149. Still have it, though I literally read the cover off of it years ago. I like his work.

*at the local Safeway! Those were the days...
