Context? Nah, that only ruins the fun of having an opinion that fuels your own sense of righteousness.

Add my name to the list of those who enjoyed JB's appearance in that story!

I've been meaning to ask, what happened to the leg on the desk?

As a foreigner, not knowing about how the industry worked,  I never understood all the fuss about assistant editor's month. What was this all about ?

While it may been have forced, Mr Byrne's inclusion in the book was well placed and as Eric points out Misters Lee and Kirby had similar appearances during their run on the book.

Just a great run on a comic book with so many highlights.  You should be extremely proud Mr Byrne.

As the story goes, all of the editors were running off to San Diego, so the (gasp) Assistant Editors had to take over their books for a month. Production timelines being what they were, that wouldn't have been a real thing, but there you go.

In keeping with the gag, everyone was "encouraged" (quotes based on JB's comments) to do an "offbeat" issue that month. Levels of participation varied. Some had a perfectly ordinary issue with a one-two page back-up and maybe something silly in the corner box (New Mutants, Thor, Rom); some had a straightforward lead with a longer "offbeat" back-up (Captain America, Daredevil, Amazing Spider-Man); and then others went all in, with the Avengers on the David Letterman show, Snowbird's battle in the snow in Alpha Flight, the Spectacular Spider-Man story with the Fred Hembeck art job, and, well:

There was nothing "crazy" or "spontaneous" about "Assistant Editor Month". Everything that appeared in the books was vetted by the editors, as usual, as well as by Shooter himself. (Can't let it get TOO crazy, you know!)

As a concept, the whole thing was WAY too "inside baseball". Most readers had no idea what an editor did, to begin with, or what kind of chaos might ensue if their control was temporarily lifted.

Perhaps worst of all, though, was that the concept undercut a very important Marvel tradition: that we were just reporting what really happened. I tried to play to that aspect in FANTASTIC FOUR and MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE. In ALPHA FLIGHT I chose to do a perfectly "ordinary" story that was impacted only in how it was shown.

But would you not then want to redraw the redrawn work? An artist’s work is never really truly finished.

Was that the one and only time they did Assistant Editor's Month? I don't recall any prior to or after that.

I just reread JB FF run. Loved it.  The only "down" moment was the Beyonder showing.up. Not a very "timeless" look on that guy.
