Indeed, one of the first things that struck me when I watched him was out of place he seemed performing any moments of humour. Excellent at brooding intensity, mind!

The accent didn't help!

I liked Eccleston, it's a shame there were problems between him and the showrunners...

It seems like every time his career is in a lull he goes public with some new "what really happened" story about Dr. Who. I liked him as The Doctor, but didn't care for most of his episodes. (I think there are maybe three that I find re-watchable).

Eccleston talks about Doctor Who because he keeps getting asked about it. This latest interview is for his new BBC series and he's just started a theatre run as Macbeth so I don't think you can say his career is in a lull.

I thought after he left, it was claimed he only signed on for the one season? Or was that damage control? He doesn`t seem to have liked his time on the G.I. Joe or Thor Dark World movies either!

Aside from Doctor Who, the only things I liked him in were THOR: THE DARK WORLD and GONE IN 60 SECONDS. He's better at playing villains.
That said, I'm glad he only lasted one season. Had he done more, we might not have gotten David Tennant as 10. Nine was too...normal...for me. Dressed too bland and didn't come off Doctorish (if that's a word) enough. I just wish that Rose had left when he did.

Eccleston has been ill served in mainstream roles. I first saw him in CRACKER. I recommend everyone search that series out.
Astounding.

From what I've read we always would have gotten Tennant at some point.

During the hueing and crying over Tennant's departure, I wondered what it would have been like if Eccleston had stayed on for three years or so, and the new audience had no idea that regeneration was a thing.
(Some might find it unlikely that Eccleston would have gathered the same following, even over three years. I hesitate to suggest that the plan was always for a regeneration after the first year, with that actor as a sort of sacrifice, to allow a "Davies giveth, Davies taketh away" view of the change after Tennant.)

I just wish he hadn't departed with hard feelings. DAY OF THE DOCTOR would have been a lot more interesting with him involved.

The original script before he declined was published in a charity book recently. I have the book, but haven' had the chance to read it yet.

I've heard about that script. The only difference I know of is that the Moment would have been someone other than Rose. I know who, but...SPOILERS! (And no, that's not a hint.)

Check out his performance in Hillsborough, he's a good actor. Shame he only had one year in the role and pretty much refused to have anything to do with the program after he left.

He`s a very good actor, but i get the impression that he finds the genre stuff he does beneath him(Despite the large pay packets!).I saw him interviewed about his current run in Macbeth and he was a ray of sunshine.
