I agree about Better Call Saul, Steve. The main character is more likable for one thing, but Better Call Saul also has a more nuanced and likable female lead as well.

Peter Martin: "She-Ra: Princess of Power was the spin-off."

Yup, you got me. In my post where I was comparing originals and spin-offs - some of each I preferred - you are absolutely right.

Since this thread began with Soap, I'll mention this here: Billy Crystal turned 70 today!

I remember both SOAP and BENSON, it's hard to say which I liked better, because they were such different shows. Sure, they were both half-hour "sitcoms", but SOAP was also, obviously, a soap opera, with it's continuing storylines. So I liked them both for different reasons.

I liked THE JEFFERSONS more than ALL IN THE FAMILY.

FAMILY MATTERS was better than PERFECT STRANGERS in the beginning, but once it turned into The Urkle Show, they became more equal (and not in a good way).

Overall I liked THE FACTS OF LIFE more than DIFFERENT STROKES (It maintained it's quality even as the young cast ages, unlike DS).

For that same reason I think I'd say I liked A DIFFERENT WORLD more than THE COSBY SHOW (and that's before real-life events made The Cosby Show hard to re-watch).

I liked HAPPY DAYS and LAVERN & SHIRLEY equally, although both shows went on way too long (once you lost Richie and Shirley, it was time to end it). I know I also liked MORK & MINDY, but am not sure how I'd rate it.

I liked MELROSE PLACE better than BEVERLY HILLS 90210 (the originals, I never watch either continuation).

Can I say Buffy the TV series as a spin-off from the film with Kristy Swanson?  Much, much better than the source.

Peter, that sounds like an idea for a thread all its own. "Was It Better On the Big Screen  or Small?"
