I`m watching TOS in HD for the first time on Netflix,
enjoying it a lot, but the numerous soft focus shots of
Kirk`s face keep taking me out of the episode.I guess in
standard definition it wasn`t so noticeable, but there`s
a definite difference! I can live with it though!

I'm able to identify the stuntmen a lot easier.
I love the brightness and clarity of HD, it's beautiful, but some things just weren't meant to be seen so clear. The directors of that era knew what you could make out thru your tube tv.

Yes, Kirk's double in The Enemy Within is very easy to
spot.Mentioning this particular episode, is using the
alien dog to test the transporter within Federation
rules?

Even in old fashioned broadcast TV mode, I used to find myself oftimes quoting a line from the MAD parody of THE CARPETBAGGERS: "And now my obvious double will give your obvious double a beating he will never forget!"

Reminds me of the Kiss tv movie, they had a black guy as
the white Ace Frehley`s stunt double! Even Kiss make-up
couldn`t hide it.

Some of the "illness" makeup in TOS is surprisingly gross in HD, such as McCoy in City on the Edge of Forever, or the dying boy with the tricycle in Miri.

Never forget that TOS was made for broadcast TV. HD is not a better format, it is the WRONG format.

I'm reminded of the people who insist on making everything they watch fit the screen they are watching it on.   Every corner must be filled, aspect ratio be damned!

I'm sure the original production crew never envisioned others would be chopping the top and bottom off the picture and stretching it all to hell and back decades later.

I love TOS in HD, looks AMAZING!!! I just bought the entire series on sale for $28 on VUDU.  It is now back up to $99!! I am now waiting for the original Twilight Zone series in HD to go on sale.

Watched Bread and Circuses in HD recently and McCoy's stunt double really looked very obvious, not that that really makes all that much of a difference.

In fact, I watched The Ultimate Computer and Bread and Circuses back to back. I was lulled into watching the latter because the former was so good.

I just watched "Court Martial", and that battle in Engineering... oh my heavens. The stunt double's hair style was lovely, but not even CLOSE to Shatner's!

And on the other hand... they did what they could with what they had. If I see it... I just ignore it. I mean, what else can one do? Ruin my enjoyment by nitpicking it to death? That's not the route I go with TOS' first two seasons.

Bill C. - Fair enough, and surely one can be amused. I just meant that nitpicking TOS doesn't amuse me... it bugs me. How many viewers now were around back then? It reminds me of modern watchers of cartoons who criticize the old Hanna Barbera cartoons... what the hell could you expect?!?!?

I WAS around then!(My first experience of Star Trek was
around 1968/9 in black and white!) Like i said, the Kiss
example with Ace Frehley`s stunt double being a black
guy is funny because it`s so obvious even in bog
standard definition!

You know eventually someone's going throw some money around and attempt to CGI those stunt doubles out.

(and  by attempt I really mean just that -- the CGI on the remastered versions already looks dated and almost lifeless when sandwiched between shots of *real* TOS)
