Seems odd that they've done this.

It's frustrating the attitudes that some share now and are using to divide us all. We are all immigrants or the children of immigrants and should take pride in that and in welcoming new Americans. I work with several people who have come to the United States from all over the world and each one of them is a good American who are contributing to the prosperity of this country. I feel fortunate to work with them and to get to know them and what makes them unique. Just off the top of my head I work with people from the Philippines, Greece, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Hungary, Canada, Germany, and Columbia. |

(Brad, autocorrect tries to change your surname to "Bricklayer").
I know what you mean, Brad. I like getting a perspective. I worked with someone who was born in Bangladesh. On one occasion, I started ranting about London traffic/congestion, he then gave me some anecdotes about traffic in Bangladesh.
I enjoy getting a fresh perspective - and hopefully giving others a perspective, me being a silly limey!

I was thinking about that recently. Happening a lot.

Recalling Denzel Washington, having won the Oscar for Best Actor, saying it would really be good news shen it could be reported that an ACTOR had won the award, without saying a BLACK actor. Similar to an inker who played down the fact that he was Gay, because he wanted to be known as an inker, not a Gay inker.

In the pre-internet days we only knew comic creators by their names, so i had no idea Sal Buscema was a man(Salvatore is not as popular a name in the UK as Sally!) The same went for a creator being black, i had no idea who was or wasn`t, i just appreciated each creator on their work. Similarly with this site, unless we explicitly state our race.I think this is a good thing, as we judge each other on our posts, not our race or nationality. Maybe it would be interesting to have a thread so we can post a picture of what we actually look like, or would that destroy the mystique?

In America, 'Sal' was used fairly regularly as a character name for Italians in movies and TV shows, so even those who didn't grow up around a lot of Italians would have been used to it being a 'guy's name'.The one that threw me, in comic credits, was 'Nicola' Cuti!

Sometimes as a minority it can be nice to know that an artist is as well. To know Jo Duffy whose writing you admire is female, that it happens and is not completely weird or unknown or impossible. Maybe in the past that Matt Baker who did the beautiful St. Johns comics covers of the late '40s-early '50s was black might have meant something to young black artists.
Plus I think it's just great that Rob Liefeld, the first blind comic artist, can earn a living! ;^)
Am in any trouble for that? Oops. Could put in Keith Giffen based on some people's reaction to his later Hex comics attempts to be Alex Toth!

I have been friends (online) with a woman who lives in Northern Ireland. We've spoken for several years. She was alive during the Troubles. She saw things no person should have to see.
We once commented on how, despite the Troubles, we didn't care about nationality. It was only after getting to know her a little that she mentioned being Irish and I mentioned being English (although I tend to refer to myself as British rather than English).
Communicating online can transcend borders and rivalries. I have known people in life who don't necessarily want to interact with others (someone I know of seems very hostile towards those living in a city which hosts a rival to his precious football club), but on a forum, who cares?

…someone I know of seems very hostile towards those living in a city which hosts a rival to his precious football club…•• This is the worst kind of idiocy. And I mean that literally. Of all the stupid things we do -- and there are SO many -- rabid attachment to sports teams transcends all others. I mean, really, is there anything of less consequence than sports? Is there anything about any sport that is worth getting oneself all enflamed, even to the point of hostility toward people who are, otherwise, of the same nation, even the same gender. the same race? We invent stupid, stupid prejudices (see: the Holocaust), but this is the nadir!

I agree. My police force even has a specialist unit to deal with football violence due to a rivalry between Aston Villa fans and Birmingham City Football fans. I find that depressing.
The sad thing is, those who would fight over something like sports would, if they communicated online, get on. John Doe supporting one team will fight with John Smith who supports the rival team if they pass each other in the street, but if they came online to a forum such as this, they would probably get on (provided their specific teams weren't mentioned).

Being of Northern Irish descent on my mother`s side, although the Collins side must be too,i have relatives who have lived through the troubles, it irks me a LOT that certain relatives take great pride in the Orange Marches. When i questioned one relative about it, she replied `We won didn`t we`? I replied `Yes, but we don`t march through Berlin every year rubbing their noses in our victory, do we`? As for football violence, as a fully fledged nerd, i actively avoid sport, but vividly remember the violence by `The Subway Army` attached to Wolves in the late 70`s/early 80`s.
