I had the honor to meet Barbara Randall Kesel the other day at Long Beach. Whatever opinions, ideas, impressions people might have of John Byrne... He like Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Claremont, Wolfman and Perez picked up the mantle of the previous generation and took comics in a direction it would not have gone. Surely, there's no major Hollywood films without him. Guys like Bernie and Len, Cockrum  and others would never have received their due. We'd never have heard of Mike Mignola! I doubt if Image comics or Dark Horse would even exist without John Byrne. There's this new generation of readers who don't know who he is. I loved Nex Men. I do not think it was a vanity project even if it went on a bit long. It is what JB needed to say, and the art and writing are simply unsurpassed. It's seamless. The story-telling is every bit as good as the drawings. Please come back, even for a short run. John Byrne, you are sorely missed by the industry, but your fingerprints are everywhere.

What did that have to do with Barbara Kesel?

I love JB’s work and all, but some of these claims just don’t make much sense.

No major Hollywood films without his work?
Would never have heard of Mike Mignola?
No one gave Wrightson, Wein or Cockrum their due before Byrne came along?
No Dark Horse Comics without John Byrne?

This reminds me of that Stan guy that came around a number of years ago.

"We'd still be reading cave paintings, if JB hadn't come along and said, 'Shut UP, Vandal Savage! THIS is how to draw a rock...' "

OK - So I ran ino Barbara and it made me think about JB because she had some of the Next Men books with her, which I loved. I am not saying all these others weren't great. I just don't think they would have gotten as recognized or the medium would have become what it was without Byrne. Mignola will admit he was introverted and shy until JB pushed him out of the nest. All the best films were influenced by JB's work. You can like or dislike the Beatles and Elvis too, but it wasn't rock n' roll without them.

Len and Bernie are not related to this page, but I miss them and wish fan favorites made out to shows or events they felt comfortable doing. I hope this avoids anymore controversy.

Sorry, I am an idiot with a PhD and a bit OCD, but I'm grateful JB has not deleted my account. I still love comics, the narratives and stories they tell. And JB is among the very best in the medium.

"Everybody needs some slack."

"Give slack. Get slack."

I don't follow some of what you said, and probably can't weigh the claims competently, but I love comics too and John Byrne comics are good ones indeed. I like them better than Prince Valiant which I could never read much of though they looked magnificent, and as much as Beanworld (which is high praise).

I agree with that Jon . Anything by JB would be great. I'm really hoping that a coffee table book on JB is still being tossed around.
