As I have said before, writers and editors still ask "Wouldn't it be cool if. . . ", but there are few who ask the next very important question: "But then what?"

The usual answer to that second question given by many of today's newer ago driven writers (like Bendis) is "because it will open up tons of new possible story ideas" (or something like that). They say this as if they know that their "brilliant" ideas are going to lead to future great stories.

That's how we got an emotional spectrum of Lanterns.

3 years? 1 year in comic book years?

Please don't do that!!

I didn't start it. I blame whomever decided it was time for Robin to grow up. He's the first comic book character who actually aged, that I know of at least.

If the FF's powers are now going to get weaker when they're not around each other, how long until Ben is living in China in disguise under an alias, or on another planet (again)?

The aging of characters in superhero comics is a really odd thing, unlike comic strips or, say Spongebob or Simpsons comics, where characters are always the same age and no one really seems to notice or mind. You can get some interesting stories out of aging characters as JB showed in Generations, but the aging in the ongoing titles makes almost no sense on any sort of timeline or scale. Things like characters getting married and having kids tends to make them older, and then you get into the problem of the kids  (or wards) growing up as with Robin and it makes them even older, as JB pointed out Lee and Kirby figured out with Franklin. How many times has Franklin grown up and been turned back into a kid at this point?

But wouldn't Superboy have been the first superhero character that aged? Or does he not count since his stories were always past stories, unlike Robin who actually aged around 15 or so years since his inception.

An expert in metahuman biology diagnosed the dwindling of Johnny's
powers--something set up in a previous issue--and said it was due to
being apart from the rest of the family. Seems that the Fantastic Four
grow less so when separated.

I think this is a neat idea...as an idea...just not for the FF. I think you
could have some fun with a scenario like that...again...not with the FF.
Unless it was a specific Doom-nefarious-plot-story arc of some kind.

DC had the various Marvels diminishing in power, the more that were active. If Billy was out fighting badguys and Mary or Freddie switched on, his power levels dropped. (By half? It was such a stupid idea I didn't pay that much attention.)

Sigh...yeah, this "development" (using the term as loosely as possible) is not even the first such ludicrous retcon Zdarsky has introduced into the comic either I'm sorry to report.  Hopefully after his run is over - sooner rather than later - the whole thing can be forgotten.  I for one would actually like to see new adventures of the Fantastic Four chronicled by a good or at least competent writer.

Though I have given up hope that my favorite superhero team of all
time will ever see anything approaching the glory days of Kirby and Lee
or Byrne again, it still pains me to learn how Ben, Johnny, Reed and
Sue continue to be mishandled.

The premise was a little more complex than that. It has to do with them being separated from each other for prolonged periods in different universes. While I don't think it's something that needed to be added to canon, it does ramp up a subplot relating to Ben hiding something from Johnny.

Apart from that, the series has the feel of a classic FF comic. There aren't many Marvel series that I really connect with these days, so I'm hoping, misstep aside, that this one continues in a positive vein.
