Allow me to be a touch long-winded...G.I. Joe was my entry into comic books (my older brother was a comic book buyer and I'd read his but G.I. Joe was "my" comic). I picked up the first issue in 1982 and read until about 1989. When I got back into comics, Devil's Due was producing them using Marvel continuity and I wasn't into it. When IDW got the rights to produce comics specifically bringing Larry Hama back onboard to continue the Marvel continuity eliminating the Devil's Due stuff (a Free Comic Book Day issue came out to jump start the franchise) and I've been reading it since. It's not beholden to the old Marvel run but the characterization is the same and they're the same characters. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the continuity but Hama does a nice job of juggling current subplots with a nod to previous times and pushing the traditional story (G.I.Joe vs. Cobra). Serpentor is not currently being used but he did factor into the Death of Snake-Eyes storyline a few years back. I really enjoy it because I was there at the start and there are some definite issues that Hama doesn't like from his Marvel run so he won't reference things like the Transformers team-up. If he brings a character in that hasn't been seen for a while, there is enough understanding of who that character is and why they are there. It's also one self-contained book, no minis or crossovers because it exists in it's own universe and that's always a good thing.

And thank you for the recap. I read some of the Marvel stuff in the 80s, watched the cartoon, and read some of the Devil's Due stuff. I'm intrigued by current stuff, hence my need to jump back on.

And if Raptor ever appears in the comic, I'll be doubly pleased. ;-)

I've bought the recent issues (comiXology) which deal with the new Snake-Eyes. Can't wait to read them.
