I'll start it just because no one else has.

The lack of discussion about this film does not bode well. I could be mistaken, but I wonder whether TLJ and all the director shenanigans has hurt this movie.

What surprises me is the release date. The Last Jedi is still in theatres. Solo comes out at the end of May. That is a tiny gap between films.

Star Wars related films will always have a hard time shaking the May 25th release date. I would imagine that the studio would like all of their films released on that date, but with Force Awakens they had to put a flag in the sand on December. It would make sense that Solo comes out in December of 2018. This film is definitely NOT necessary for the character, but a significant amount of pandering to the masses is required to recoup the cost of buying Star Wars. Stand by for Yoda, Obi-Wan, Luke: The Early Years, Boba Fett, IG-88; Junk Yard to Rock Hard, etc. etc.

Ummm...Disney’s has no trouble recouping any of their investment in
Lucasfilm.

Whether or not Han Solo NEEDED a backstory or not...this one, at
least based on this trailer, looks like it could be a fun time at the
movies. Personally, can’t ask for much more than that.

Well, golly, this teaser reaction satire...

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=80T59B2RVO

...was pretty spot-on in terms of predicting what would be in the actual teaser.

Seems to me Disney recouped that massive sum just in time to start 'misfiring' with the franchise. SOLO is expected to bomb from what I've read... and finishing the latest trilogy on a good note just got harder after the mixed reviews of "The Last Jedi".

Of course, I can be wrong... but I'm curious to how the next STAR WARS CELEBRATION will present these latest events to their disappointed fans.

Disney have not recouped the cost of Lucasfilm through ticket sales yet. As the article even points out, ticket sales are not profit. Production budget, percentage points, marketing costs, revenue share with theatres... There's an awful lot that needs to be subtracted.

One of the problems with the Solo film is that everything has to be bigger and faster and MORE to compete with that has gone before, but then we're left with Han Solo having been involved in exploits that were bigger, faster and MORE when he was younger than the adventure he had when he met Luke and Obi Wan.

Also doesn't help to give form to his past as it destroys the mystery and is always inferior to the more nebulous notions of what might have made him who he is. It was kind of fun to speculate how he knew so much about Empire procedures, but now we will be told exactly what is what and that isn't as much fun.

***

I managed 40+ years without one!

One could say the same about others (Inspector Clouseau, anyone?). What was there was in my imagination.

I'm curious as to how (or if) they're going to address this line from ANH:

Han:  "Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other. I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen anything to make me believe there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything."

Sooo, will they simply avoid him running into any Force-related phenomena, or Force-users (like say, his old friend Maz) until after ANH? Or he does, and just cynically passes it off as "simple tricks and nonsense?"

I enjoyed Rouge One and am enthused about this first SOLO trailer. Warning, non-PC joke follows: I'm like an abused wife when it comes to Star Wars. I'll swear to never go back after being bitterly disappointed once again, but instantly get googly-eyed when new promises are made.

Why is Alden Ehrenreich speaking with an Australian accent?

All the other actors/characters seem OK.

Ehrenreich is the only one that sticks out like he is miscast...

Ehrenreich has no Harrison Ford/Han Solo-vibe at all...

+++++++++++++

If you get away with this joke, I'm protesting against the double-standard! I took plenty of troll-heat for saying virtually the same thing.

No, it was pretty assholish, but the thread doesn’t need to be derailed.

From the teaser trailer, this appears to be a heist movie, which means I’ll end up liking it because I like all heist movies regardless of quality.

How witty....no wait I mean snarky and smug. I can get not liking or
looking forward to something, but I don’t get the need to invest time and
energy into coming up with a “game” to show how “clever” and superior
you are for being snarky.

Agreed but I’m sure the licensing deals on everything from paper
towels to clothes to comics, toy sales, increased theme park and cruise
tickets, and a hundred other things help bend that curve. The idea that
Disney is worried about not recouping this investment is not based in
reality.

Not sure which reviews you’re referring to? Last Jedi was almost
universally praised by critics and got an “A” CinemaScore and Disney
was so impressed they gave Johnson his trilogy to work on. If you’re
talking about the handful on entitled fanboys on Rotten Tomatoes; I
don’t think Disney cares about them too much vs. the billion dollars in
box office it brought in and legitimate and internal praise it got.
