There's enough material, canonical or otherwise, between the resurrection and the assumption for an interesting movie, and it's pretty untrod ground. If Gibson does the agonizing slow-motion thing again he could probably stretch it out to two hours. Plus Paul's Christian persecutions would offer plenty of opportunity for rancid anti-Semitic caricaturing.

I gladly skipped the original, already then having had my fill of all things Mel Gibson.

There was, in fact, a movie just a couple of years ago, called RISEN. Dealt with this time frame.

From what I read I believe it's more of a prequel. Either way, I have no need for more religious propaganda in my life. But I hope they include the rock monsters from Aronofsky's Noah!

I did watch a Noah's Ark film with pirates in (late 90s, I think). I am not averse to religious films. The mini-series JESUS OF NAZARETH features compelling performances and some stunning music.
As a non-believer, people have asked me about that. But I'll watch such films for the same reason I'll watch Zeus, Odin or Thor in a film.

The big difference is that Christian movies are propaganda, while movies featuring traditional mythology are not.

So he's going to be resurrected for the sequel? Not that old hackneyed contrivance again!

There was, in fact, a movie just a couple of years ago, called RISEN. Dealt with this time frame. ------------------------------------ Without comment on the historical validity of resurrection of Jesus, which this movie assumes, there is a very high level of historical verisimilitude in terms of Roman culture and military life in the Palestinian garrison of the first century. So, regardless of what you think of the story itself (and it is very much pro-Christian propaganda), they at least got the historical backdrop right.

So he's going to be resurrected for the sequel? Not that old hackneyed contrivance again!•• There used to be a "rule" at Marvel that no character could be resurrected if we'd seen the body. This led to an amusing back-and-forth between Roger Stern and myself. Roger declared one day, decades ago, that he was going to kill off the Ant-Man villain Egghead. And he was going to do it in such a way that the character could never be brought back. To this end Rog had Egghead blasted to death with a ray gun, and his ashes scattered at sea. Dead and dead, right? WRONG, I declared. Rog had made a fatal -- or non-fatal in this case -- mistake. He used a RAY GUN to kill Egghead. Not a more conventional device like a pistol or dropping a 16 ton weight on him. A RAY GUN. Obviously, I said, it was all a set-up! Egghead had arranged to "die" in this way, knowing that he was to be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea. The ray gun had actually turned him into "Instant Egghead", and when his ashes hit the water, he reconstituted! It's called comic books!

Along those lines, JB, I had customers and friends that would tell me that Colossus was really, truly dead after Marvel killed him in the 1990s. The proof he could never return is because he was cremated. I said in fiction anybody can be resurrected, and that if I were to write the story I could do it in a matter of a few pages:
Cosmic-level baddie with a mad-on for the X-Men uses his abilities to reconstitute the remains of Colossus and make him live again, but this time in the villian's control.
Baddie uses Colossus to strike at the X-Men, gets beaten eventually, and Xavier uses his mental powers to restore Colossus mentally, and, viola, Colossus is back again!
Marvel did bring Colossus back to life, and when they did they didn't explain it too much. In fact, I am not sure if there was ever a real explanation.
Anyway...
I never saw "The Passion of The Christ." I did see "The Passion of The Jew" on SOUTH PARK. I wonder if they will do a sequel to correspond with the movie sequel?

As we say in the Biz, nobody dies forever!Of course, many resurrections occur because some previous writer/artist team has decided a character is "lame" and needs to be killed off. This is precisely why Mark Gruenwald (there he is again!) created Skurge, despite my protest that his definition of "lame" was very different from mine.
